The Rector & Visitors of the University of... is Hiring a Computational Scientist, Research Computing Near Charlottesville, VA

UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking two Research Computing Associates/Computational Scientists to join their team. These are entry-level positions. The incumbent supports University faculty and researchers, assisting them with UVA Research Computing services to produce computing solutions within their fields of research.
One position is looking to be filled immediately; the second position would have a tentative start date of January 2023.

The ideal candidate has an outgoing personality with a passion for providing high-quality services, enjoys supporting and educating academic researchers, has some experience with academic computing, and is able to apply those skills to UVA's research computing environment. We seek an energetic self-starter and quick learner who enjoys technical problem solving and working on multiple projects simultaneously, has strong communication skills, and is a team player. The ideal candidate will have research experience in image analysis, bioinformatics, life science, or data science.
We offer a friendly, diverse, and inclusive work environment in a small group (less than 25 staff) and a supportive workplace. Funding is available for a limited amount of travel for professional development.
Both positions are hybrid roles requiring occasional travel to UVA campus (grounds) for office work, educational outreach, and meeting with researchers.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support for use of RC's computing and storage services.
  • Create internal and user-facing technical documentation.
  • Assist senior staff with expanding educational and consulting offerings in their field of expertise, such as bioinformatics, image analysis, or data science and database usage.
  • Support senior staff with organizing outreach events to strengthen the research computing community at UVA. For one of the positions, this includes expansion of RC's partnership with peer institutions under the NSF-funded ACCORD (Assuring Controls Compliance of Research Data) program.
  • Assist with onboarding and educating researchers to use RC's computing resources for processing sensitive and highly sensitive data.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree kin mathematics, science, engineering, or a related area.
  • Familiarity with data analysis in a Linux environment.
  • At least one year of relevant experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering, general engineering, science, or mathematics, or research experience in life science, data science, or a related area is preferred. At least 2 years of experience with R, Python, or MATLAB programming.
  • Familiarity with image analysis, computational bioinformatics, computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, or clinical data analysis workflows is a plus.
  • Familiarity with using database management systems (e.g., SQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB). Experience with high-performance computing and basic shell scripting is a plus.
  • Teaching or user training experience in any computational research domain is a plus.
  • Familiarity with software container technology is a plus.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
