Description

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to about 450 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory.

The Northwest School seeks a strategic, organized, and student-centered Assistant Upper School Director for a 12-month (1.0 FTE) role beginning July 1, 2024. Depending on the successful candidate’s background, experiences, and preferences, the Assistant Upper School Director role may include a .25 teaching appointment or work in another functional area within the Upper School.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Serve with the full authority of the Upper School (US) director in the director’s absence, or at the director’s discretion to ensure continuity of programming and responsiveness to student/family/faculty needs, including:
  • Address students, parent/guardian, and faculty concerns in the US, particularly when other communication channels (e.g. teacher, advisor, department chair) have been exhausted
  • Provide oversight and leadership in student discipline
  • Serve as administrator of the day/week on a rotating basis
  • Collaborate with US director and US administrative team to prioritize presence at school-wide and divisional events, including arts, athletics, interest & affinity groups, boarding program activities, Parent/Guardian Association events, and admissions programming
  • Supervise the 9th through 12th grade level coordinators and provide direction for the US advisory program
  • Serve as a representative of Director’s office on the following committees:
    • US Student Success team
    • International Admissions
    • Summits
    • Ed Tech
    • SEL Scope & Sequence
  • Serve as event coordinator for 12th grade graduation
  • Coordinate new student orientation and back-to-school programming
  • Collaborate with instructional coaches, division directors, director of HR, and director of student success in refining faculty evaluation and goal-setting processes. Assist with classroom observations on behalf of divisional leadership
  • In cooperation with the registrar, department chairs, and the Director of Global Programs and Marketing, coordinate schedules for visiting/exchange students
  • Draft/edit divisional communications to students/parents/guardians
  • Assist with drafting and ongoing review of divisional policies, revisions to student/family handbook, advisor handbook, curriculum guide and registration materials, etc.
  • Co-lead US faculty meetings. Attend additional faculty meetings to advance the work of the division, including but not limited to: Academic coordinating team, Curriculum committee, Academic faculty, All faculty, Grade Level Meetings, DEI Wednesday morning meetings
  • Provide back-up on-call coverage to Director of Residential Life and boarding program staff
  • Assist with evaluation review and auditing of student progress toward graduation requirements
  • Other duties as assigned by the Upper School Director or Head of School

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the School’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability, and global perspective.
  • A commitment to a learning and working culture where all community members feel seen, valued, and heard.
  • A bachelor’s degree and five years of progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job’s essential functions is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively with large groups, as well as in writing
  • A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree is preferred
  • Experience in a school with international students

Compensation:

Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience. Salary range is $70,000 - $100,000 annually.
