Mission Overview & Responsibilities
The New York Times is looking for a Product Designer to craft native-first experiences, enhancing our position as a top daily destination for people seeking to understand and engage with the world.
As Product Designer on the AppX team, your primary focus will be on creating and evolving design artifacts and components that enhance habit forming functionality, empowering our readers to increase engagement. Success requires close collaboration with designers, product managers, engineers, product marketing, data and insights, and researchers, and an understanding of user behavior, intentions, and goals.
At our company, you'll learn how to lend your skills and expertise to collaborate with other design team members and attend regular design rituals where you'll receive and provide critique, identify opportunities for consistency across the function, and help steer the team towards success. Reporting to the Product Design Director of the AppX team, you will support hybrid work, based in our Times Square office in NYC. The Times is in the process of transitioning to hybrid work and we plan to speak with all candidates about where they're based and how they work in a hybrid environment.
Responsibilities:
Support high-level product strategy, addressing important user needs.
Establish processes for efficient artifact upkeep (such as service blueprints, user journeys, and wire-flows), integrating the news app across services and platforms.
Help ensure the news app aligns with our design system.
Adhere to inclusive and accessible design principles.
Represent team's work across programs and missions.
Explore diverse concepts iteratively towards a vision.
Contribute to team and product design rituals.
Basic Qualifications:
3 years of experience designing for native app products.
Experience in user research, prototyping and interaction design.
In-depth use of data and qualitative research for informed product and design decisions.
Experience increasing engagement and habituation through service design and content strategy.
Experience collaborating with product and engineering teams.
Proficient in breaking down challenges into smaller decisions, framing them as trade-offs, such as balancing time versus scope.
You have a portfolio of work that showcases your thought process along with finished design work. Applications without portfolios will not be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficient in streamlining design flows, components, and experiences within a larger design system.
Experience translating strategic goals into a unified user experience.
Experienced in mapping user journeys and intentions, aligning with organizational structures.
Demonstrate teamwork and foster inclusive dialogue.
Experience presenting and documenting design concepts and strategies.
