About the Role

The New York Times seeks a Director of Engineering in the Subscriber Experiences mission to support the teams responsible for the award-winning New York Times mobile app: where millions of readers go to understand the events shaping the world.

You will report to the Head of Engineering for the Subscriber Experiences Mission, working with partners in Product, Design, and Data to help our Engineering team bring new user experiences to our products, using those experiences and the work of our teams to develop sustainable and reliable architectures for delivering even more new products.

• We build the New York Times app together with contributing teams throughout the Times
• We are two teams with sixteen iOS and Android engineers and two engineering managers responsible for phone and tablet apps across both platforms
• We build app infrastructure and core features that highlight our award-winning journalism and offer gateways into our bundle of NYT products

Responsibilities:

• Manage, directly and indirectly, a growing team of engineers and managers building infrastructure and features for the New York Times app
• Articulate the technical and organizational goals of a multi-team product engineering team—and integrate those two goals
• Partner with product owners, project managers, designers, and data analysts to prioritize and plan work efforts, considering news deadlines, long-term technical strategies, and the growth of the team
• Coach and develop engineers and tech leads—both through direct guidance and in how you connect those engineers to work opportunities
• Recruit for and retain extraordinary engineering talent
• Create an inclusive team culture

• Experience leading both iOS and Android product engineering teams
• Past software engineering experience working with mobile technologies
