The New School is Hiring a Part-Time Faculty | Center for English Language Studies Near New York, NY

The Center for English Language Studies in The New School has teaching opportunities in both the Intensive English Program and the ESL curriculum for international students in the degree programs at Parsons School of Art and Design. Courses are in person. Selected applicants will be interviewed and offers will be made on a course-by-course basis since positions are part-time. The Center will review applications on a rolling-basis.

For a faculty member to be qualified to teach in the Center for English Language Studies they must meet the following criteria. This position reports to the Senior Director of the Center for English Language Studies.
Part-time faculty are responsible for: developing course content and syllabi in consultation with Program Leadership; attending all classes they are assigned to teach as scheduled by the University; reporting any emergency faculty absences to the PTF Affairs rep and/or Academic Leadership; recording student attendance in a timely manner within two days of each class session; and adhering to all University policies (ie., FERPA, exclusive use of New School email, etc.), as outlined in the ACT-UAW Local 7902 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare course materials that address the performance objectives for the assigned course and level
  • Use Canvas to deliver and/or support assigned classes, Use Zoom to deliver and or support in-person lessons.
  • Display excellent classroom management skills
  • Display cultural awareness and use inclusive teaching practices
  • Provide language assessments throughout the semester and give timely feedback
  • Track and monitor student attendance and progress
  • Support and adhere to all policies procedures, and timeline established for the program.
  • Attend mandatory start of term faculty meeting
  • Maintain collegial and collaborative relationship with faculty community
  • Communicate with the Senior Director of CELS as needed.
Work Mode
  • On-Campus Position – Employees in this position are expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours due to the nature of the work being that which is not feasible, or not in the best interest of the organization, to be performed remotely.

Hourly Rate
  • The hourly rate, as set by the CBA between the University and ACT-UAW 7902 for AY24/25 is $146/hour for Lecture/Seminar courses.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL or related field
  • At least two years of experience teaching English for academic purposes
  • Knowledge of best practices in teaching language and student learning and development
  • Willingness to utilize technology to facilitate and enhance student learning experiences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate international students
  • Interest and/or experience in a creative field including art and design, and music.
  • Familiarity with digital learning tools and platforms
