Job Description
The Cyber Risk Optimization Group (CROG), within NREL's Energy and Security Resilience Center, performs research to better understand the threats, detection strategies and mitigation opportunities for renewable energy infrastructure and distributed energy resources. Our efforts include technical assessments of existing technologies and near-term innovations, research into ICS communications technologies, network architectures and protocols, as well as informing the development and application of cybersecurity frameworks and policy. CROG researchers collaborate with government and industry partners to contribute to a more secure and resilient renewable energy infrastructure with global impact.
The Cyber Risk Optimization Group has a need for a mid-career software engineer to support web application development in support of existing and emerging capabilities. The successful candidate will bring experience in front-end web-application development to support on-going programs helping to secure distributed energy systems, visualize cybersecurity threats and integrate with current research tools and the NREL cyber range. NREL researchers will also contribute to new proposals and programs spanning a range of cybersecurity and energy systems initiatives. Research areas span a broad range to include renewable energy systems, industrial control systems security, internet of things technologies, electric vehicles, and the emerging smart grid on behalf of both federal and private sector clients. This position requires strong technical talent, as well as an ability to collaborate as part of a diverse team and a desire to learn cybersecurity challenges within the energy sector.
Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with existing software development team members to deliver sound well-architected software solutions in accordance with program deliverables.
  • Maintain and further develop an existing application code base.
  • Apply object-oriented development principles to create a maintainable and functional platform.
  • Coordinate with other projects and programs to ensure inter-operability and/or required interfaces.
  • Provide vision and creativity to identify and pursue improvements to the current platform as well as new opportunities.
  • Work closely with a diverse team of varied technical backgrounds
Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance and SCI access. SCI access may require a polygraph examination. To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
  • Significant web application development experience with Vue/React/Angular
  • Experience updating and maintaining technical debt.
  • Significant experience with C#, Java and/or Python
  • Experience using Git/GitLab
  • Microservice architecture development experience
  • Expertise in object-oriented programming
  • Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Linux experience
  • CI/CD experience

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
