The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is Hiring an Assistant Director (12375, grade 20) Near Prince, MD

The Brentwood Arts Exchange is The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's component of the Gateway Arts Center, a public-private partnership that serves as an anchor for Prince George's County Gateway Arts District. Dedicated to serving the communities of Prince George’s County, the Brentwood Arts Exchange features two contemporary art galleries, music performances, a retail store selling work by local artisans, and non-traditional arts education programs for all ages. 
 
The Assistant Director’s primary areas of responsibility will focus on arts program marketing, including supervising part-time employees assisting with marketing and graphic design, and assisting with event management. Ideal candidates will be motivated by a passion to make high quality arts programs accessible and engaging to a broad public in service to building community.
 
The Assistant Director works under guidance from the Director to perform a variety of duties to assist in managing programs and arts center operations, including volunteer coordination, supporting visual arts exhibitions, managing summer day camps, and maintaining administrative records. The Assistant Director coordinates within The Commission and with community stakeholders to perform special projects in surrounding communities; serves in the absence of the Director; and performs other related duties. The arts center operates six days per week. This position works varying hours, which may include extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
 
Applicants should have: A strong understanding of arts marketing, Commitment to developing quality arts programs that are accessible to diverse audiences; Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects at once; Knowledge of contemporary visual art; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Familiarity with community-based arts education programs; Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  1. Managing marketing for visual and performing arts events, retail, and arts education programs.
  2. Work with artists, musicians, technicians, and event staff to develop and present exhibitions and concerts.
  3. Assist in managing retail operations selling handmade works by local artisans.
  4. Supervise part-time staff working in marketing and design.
5. Provide support to the Director in management of all aspects of art center operations
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Facility Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field.
  2. One (1) year of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, tennis, aquatics, ice rinks).
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
  5. Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics).
  6. Pass Commission medical exam.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree or four years’ experience in the arts, arts administration, or a related field; and
  2. One year of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to arts, arts administration, or a related field; or
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working Conditions
Works inside and outside an assigned facility which may operate seven days per week. Works extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays. On-call to respond to emergency situations as required. Incumbents in this class must frequently remain in a stationary position, operate motor vehicles, communicate and exchange information with internal staff and the public, be able to see for short and long distances, and occasionally lift equipment and other items weighting up to 49 pounds and ascend and descend ladders and stairs.
