DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional position involving responsibility for evaluating, planning and providing physical therapy treatment to patients in accordance with written prescription or referral from a physician who provides medical direction. The Physical Therapist is responsible to a Senior Physical Therapist or, if there is no senior position, to a designated administrator/director for the operation of the department. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Physical Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapy Aides and clerical employees assigned to the service. A Physical Therapist does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:
1. Master’s degree or higher in physical therapy. Licensed and currently registered by the New York State Education Department as a Physical Therapist.
OR
2. A New York State Education Department permit to practice as an Physical Therapist. q If the appointing authority is a: (a) public, incorporated or licensed proprietary hospital, a licensed nursing home, a public health agency, a recognized public school setting, or in the civil service of the state; AND The appointing authority has a licensed physical therapist who is available and willing to provide on-site supervision as described in Education Law section 6735.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
2) Limited Permitee’s appointed under Option 2 will be required to obtain their license in accordance with NYS Education Law Article 136 §6735.
NOTE: The appointing authority is responsible for verifying the appointee’s licensure throughout employment
NOTE: The term "patient" should be changed to "resident" when position is used in the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
