About Us:

The Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida’s mission is to improve the self-sufficiency, economic mobility, and quality of life for adults through increasing literacy skills and education levels with formal instruction and volunteer-based tutoring.

To advance that mission, the Literacy Alliance seeks AmeriCorps Members for full-time or part-time National Service to expand adult education and literacy instruction for adult learners.

Service is specifically focused on providing one-on-one tutoring and coaching to adult learners in the on-site Learning Lab open during the week day. Activities can include reading and math tutoring, job coaching, and digital literacy or learning to use computers and other technologies.

Duties

AmeriCorps Members will provide support for the following types of adult education activities:

  • One-on-one tutoring in reading, language arts and math
  • Coaching on computer use and learning online classrooms
  • Tutoring in GED Preparation (Reasoning Through Language, Math, Social Studies and Science)
  • Adult Life Skills Workshops (Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, Digital Literacy, Family, and Career Development)
  • Homework help sessions
  • Individual coaching and mentoring
  • Family Literacy coaching
  • Student registration and orientation (including pre and post testing)
  • Curriculum adaptation or development to meet student interests and goals.
  • Recordkeeping of attendance and student outcomes
  • Data entry to support student intakes, attendance, and outcomes using our LACES tracking system
  • Community outreach for student and volunteer recruitment

Areas of Responsibilities

  • Support the Literacy Alliance's drop in learning lab available to adult learners enrolled in the Literacy Alliance.
  • Attend Initial Member Training and ongoing Professional Development Training and Activities
  • Conduct Student Testing and Goal Setting
  • Data Collection and Tracking of student performance data which may include: personal and demographic information, attendance, outcomes/goals, and assessments.

Qualifications

  • Education – minimum high school diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (English)
  • Excellent computer and online usage skills
  • Good interpersonal/soft skills
  • Education and Teaching/Tutoring experience (preferred, but not required)
  • Managing tasks and deadlines
  • Coaching and Mentoring adult students
  • Competency in Google Suite
  • Reliable transportation required
  • The Member must pass a National Criminal History Background check. This includes a FBI background check via fingerprints, a local background check, and their name run through the National Sex Offender database (www.nsopw.gov). This is contingent on any member beginning their service year.

Locations

The Literacy Alliance office is located in the Jessie Ball duPont Center in downtown Jacksonville. Some activity also takes place at community sites such as neighborhood churches or community centers.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $5,000.00 - $20,000.00 per year
