With a mission to educate and prepare individuals for life, The Light House is a non-profit located in Southeastern Connecticut specializing in disabilities services and support. Joining The Light House means joining a team of staff that continually searches for creative and alternative methods towards the common goal of success for each individual that we work with.
The Light House is currently seeking a Full-Time Special Education Paraprofessional to work with students 1:1 in our state approved private special education school. Paraprofessionals work 1:1 with students under guidance of a Special Education teacher. Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities who have IEPs and Behavioral Plans is preferred but not necessary.
This is a position where you can make a difference in other’s lives. The ideal candidate will be a caring and creative self –starter with a passion for making a difference in people’s lives. We are looking for candidates with skills and knowledge in implementing programs and activities as outlined in the individual’s educational plan. Effective written and verbal communication necessary.
Key responsibilities include:
· Provide 1:1 assistance to students
· Provide supervision, guidance and instruction to students. Supports may include: direct supervision, personal care, behavioral interventions etc.
· Delivers instruction as directed by the teacher or teacher’s assistant
· Ensures students are engaged in learning at all times
· Collect student-specific data
· Requires using Physical and Psychological Management Techniques
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or GED required
· Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred but not required, as long as you have the heart and ability to show compassion, we will train you
· Any certifications necessary for the position will be paid for and coordinated through The Light House
· Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving history
· All employees are required to be "screened through DDS and DCF abuse and neglect registries as well as receive fingerprinting for criminal background checks
Working Conditions:
Hours: Monday through Friday approximately between the hours of 8-4:30. No weekends.
Must be able to sit, stand and walk at an assigned location(s) and work for extended periods of time; bend/stoop, kneel and balance frequently; climb, reach above shoulder level; push/pull, squat and crouch occasionally; with assistance, lift, carry and position individuals of various weight. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. Must be able to drive multi-passenger vehicles for extended periods throughout the day.
