Start Date: ImmediatelyEmployment Type: This is a part-time position. A flexible schedule including occasional weekend hours is required.Location: Los Angeles, CA Reports to: Data Science Lead Instructor General OverviewThe Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will uplift their communities. The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-35 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 2,000 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design. TKH team members value the opportunity to: apply their skills while giving back to low-income youth and other underrepresented communities; lead innovation in the emerging tech movement in the Bronx, Newark, Atlanta, and Los Angeles; and join a scaling nonprofit where every team member is expected to contribute to strategy, create solutions and helps shape improve organizational culture.Role OverviewReporting to the Data Science Lead Instructor, the Data Science Junior Instructor will be responsible for leading tasks related to technical class instruction and fellow support including class facilitation, assignment review and grading, curricular development support, and holding office hours with fellows.The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with a problem-solving orientation and curious mindset who communicates effectively and possesses the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment that prioritizes high accountability and respect for individual learning needs.
  • Support learners of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Manage a high volume of assignment reviews through superlative time management skills
  • Facilitate workshops based on a provided curriculum with guidance from the Career Lead Instructor.
As a growing organization, we expect that the specific needs and job description will shift over time and other duties may be assigned by the Data Science Lead Instructor and Manager of Curricula and Instruction. Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Assisting Instruction and Course Delivery
    • Facilitate a weekly virtual course following a provided curriculum for a group of LA-based fellows from 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm PST on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays between September and June.
    • Assistant in the conducting of 3 weekly virtual classes to a cohort of KKCF high school-aged fellows for 6 weeks between the hours of 7:00 am - 12:30 am PST during June, July, and August. (Exact days of the week, dates, and times TBD within this range)
    • Assist in all classroom management tasks, instruction, and implementation of both guided and unguided labs via Zoom.
    • Manage a calendar/booking system for student office hours, minimum 4 hours a week or as needed via email, phone, web conferencing, and/or in-person tutoring and meetings for LA- and East Coast-based fellows.
    • Review Student Weekly Feedback and provide insight on areas that need to be either reimagined or where students need additional support.
    • Attend weekly teaching and learning meetings to receive updates, discuss feedback, and participate in critical team discussions.
 
  • Student Support & Evaluation
    • Grade student assignments, labs, and assessments for LA- and East Coast-based fellows.
    • Meeting weekly grading and lesson plan preparation deadlines
    • Support in providing insight into data related to attendance, incident reports, lab submission rates, and grades, weekly assignment submission rates and grades, and project deliverable submission rates and grades
    • Attend weekly track meetings to discuss support strategies for fellows in your track, and review student attendance reports, grades, and classroom feedback.
    • Facilitate weekly review sessions with your track for LA- and East Coast-based fellows.
    • Support students who have entered the pre-training program by monitoring and answering questions via Slack and occasionally providing 1-1 help sessions via web conferencing and/or in-person.
    • Support students and facilitate class sessions during the certification prep period.
 
  • Curriculum Tasks
    • Assist with the creation of unit plans, lesson plans, and presentation slides, to be prepared for class several weeks in advance. Working closely with the Lead Instructor, recommend modifications to the curriculum for LA-based fellows as needed based on content retention and course pacing.
    • Support in maintaining instructional materials including lectures, readings, assignments, exams, labs, projects, etc. for use during in-person and/or virtual settings, creating custom materials as needed for regional instructional needs.
    • Assist the recruitment and student success team with vetting applicants' baseline technical knowledge to inform the selection needed.
Schedule RequirementsCandidates must be available for the specific weekly events described below:
  • Weekly class times (Innovation Fellowship - September to June): Monday - Wednesday 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm PST
  • Weekly class times (KKCF Fellowship - June to August): Monday - Thursday 7:00 am - 12:30 am PST (Exact days of the week, dates, and times TBD within this range)
  • Weekly department meeting: Tuesdays 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm PST (preferred but not required)
  • Office hours with fellows: Friday & weekend required (time of day is flexible)
The remaining weekly hours are flexible.QualificationsExperience:
  • Proficiency in Python3 Programming, Git, and Basic Bash Commands required
  • Experience with Jupyter Notebooks required
  • Experience with SQL, Flask/Django, Numpy, Scipy, and Pandas is a major plus
  • Familiarity working with JSON data
  • Familiarity with statistical and other mathematical concepts (regression analysis, linear algebra concepts)
  • Skilled at problem-solving and algorithmic thinking
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, beginner JavaScript, UX/UI, wireframing, web design, graphic design, computational thinking
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field and/or Bootcamp completion is preferred
  • 2 years of professional experience in technology or relevant field is preferred
  • 1 years experience with classroom management, teaching, or working with young adults is required
  • Previous experience working with underprivileged communities is a plus
  • Experience with eLearning, computer-enhanced teaching, and blended learning approaches preferred
  • Experience working with a Learning Management System, including monitoring attendance, participation, and grading.
  • Strong presentation, public speaking, and "people skills"
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Excellent writing skills for content creation activities
Skills & Approach to Work:
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Google Suite, Google Classroom and other Learning Management Systems
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive communication skills, including public speaking abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment.

Compensation
