Employment Type: Full-time exempt, 18-month position as part of the Civic Science Fellows programLocation: Atlanta, GA; Bronx, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Newark, NJ - (hybrid preferred)Reports to: Senior Director of Strategy & InnovationStart Date: no later than March 1, 2024End Date: September 30, 2025Organizational OverviewThe Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will lift their communities The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education-to-employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16-35 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 2,000 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design. TKH team members value the opportunity to: apply their skills while giving back to low-income youth and other underrepresented communities; lead innovation in the emerging tech movement in the Bronx, Newark, Atlanta, and Los Angeles; and join a scaling nonprofit where every team member is expected to contribute to strategy, create solutions and helps shape improve organizational culture.Role Overview The TKH Civic Science Fellow will participate in the Rita Allen Civic Science Fellows program. Civic Science Fellows are early career leaders from diverse demographic, cultural, and professional backgrounds. They possess expertise in disciplines that are relevant to civic science and are poised to work effectively across communities and stakeholders. As part of the Fellows program, you’ll be part of a cohort of Fellows who are positioned across different scientific associations, organizations, and institutions, providing you with a peer learning group focused on scientific and societal challenges. Please note: this is an 18-month contract position. TKH is hosting a Civic Science Fellow to explore key learning questions to diversify and democratize the Data Science field and access to STEM education. The Civic Science Fellow would support TKH in our continuous efforts to ensure our programs bring cross-sector impact, empowering people from all backgrounds to shape science and benefit from its promise. As an Innovation team member, the Civic Science Fellow will report to the Senior Director of Strategy & Innovation. The Civic Science Fellow will be focused on work supporting the innovation and ongoing refinement of both our core programming and emerging earned revenue services, serving in a key “research & development” role for the team.The Civic Science Fellow will lead the organization through the exploration of key questions such as:

Preparing a Diverse Workforce for the Future: How can TKH effectively equip a diverse array of job trainees to navigate the evolving landscape of tech work, especially in the realm of artificial intelligence? This exploration will encompass factors such as racial and ethnic diversity, gender identities, and accommodating special learning needs, ultimately fostering an empowered workforce.
Equity in STEM Access: How can TKH strategically engage the constituents of other human services organizations, particularly multi-service community organizations, to democratize access to STEM education?
Advancing Diversity in Data Science: How can TKH enhance our Data Science course to cultivate a more diverse cohort of data analysts and scientists, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds in the field?

The big-picture finding TKH hopes to generate through this project is how to effectively promote systemic change that will yield inclusivity and diversity within STEM fields. Through our collaboration with a Civic Science Fellow, we will work to learn how to more effectively engage a diverse array of stakeholders across non-profit, governmental, and tech sectors to advance our mission of empowering underrepresented youth and preparing them for tech careers. We will share our findings immediately following the conclusion of the project through blog posts, articles, social media posts, presentations delivered at stakeholder conferences, and more. The Civic Science Fellow will also participate in various learning communities - both that TKH is already a part of and ones that they identify as strong opportunities for furthering systems change and collaboration. Our growing communal presence is the key conduit through which this project and a Civic Science Fellowship collaboration will achieve its goals. Key Areas of ResponsibilityResearch & Development (50%)

Design and conduct a baseline assessment that creates a full picture of TKH’s current status in reference to each of the three key learning questions identified above (open to shifting as the project is scoped in partnership with the Fellow).
Conduct internal assessment and evaluation, via focus groups, surveys, and interviews.

Identify pathways through which we can begin to evaluate TKH’s ecosystem-wide impact.
Conduct focus groups with staff and stakeholders to identify, ideate, and propose solutions to key strategic questions, to inform the organization's 2025 strategic plan.
Document feedback from industry leaders that informs ongoing program evolution.
Develop, manage, and implement prototypes and pilots to test hypotheses.
Coordinate collaboration with external partners and stakeholders for related projects and research.

Program Evaluation & Innovation (30%)

Leverage the current dataset of organizational feedback and performance to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.
Using the aforementioned baseline assessment, identify and propose solutions for how TKH can adjust our programming, operations, and partnership-based work.
Propose and implement a data strategy for assessing the quality and efficacy of our newest programmatic offerings and pilots.
Project manage the design and implementation of the proposed data strategy and evaluation plan.

Field Engagement (20%)

Practice field engagement and thoughtful leadership in order to publicize our learnings, giving them scalable impact by sharing insights across our ecosystem.
Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, (co-)authors publications, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
Identify & secure 3-5 new partnerships and 10-15 strategic partnership prospects.
Serve as an account manager for partnerships relevant to research and design projects.

QualificationsExperience:

3-4 years of experience in research & development, systems change, or equivalent educational experience. Prior work experience in workforce development, higher education, government affairs, and/or edtech fields is a plus.
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience or education. Advanced degree, is a plus.

Skills & Approach to Work:

Outstanding ability to organize, collect, and analyze information and data, and share it in an accessible manner (e.g., written or other formats) so it is relevant and useful to multiple audiences.
Experience in scholarly or on-the-ground engagement with communities that might see themselves as disconnected from science, based on real or perceived divides across value-based, ideological, or demographic differences.
Ability to develop, independently manage, and execute projects.
Willingness to integrate research and practice, e.g., the science of engagement, collaboration, and related areas of exploration.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate scientific information effectively with expert and lay audiences.
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities, deadlines, and accounts in a changing environment. Adaptive, flexible, and highly focused, demonstrating a readiness to support organizational growth.
Familiarity with the complex challenges that educators face in their work to support youth who are the furthest from economic and educational opportunity. Knowledge of broad educational trends and the national market for workforce and digital equity programs is a plus.

Ability to travel occasionally and participate in evening and weekend networking events.
Computer proficiency, including Google Suite, Zoom, Slack, Asana, and Salesforce.
Strong preference for the ability to work weekly out of one of our offices (Atlanta, GA; Los Angeles, CA; Newark, NY; New York) but is open to remote arrangements for the right candidate.

CompensationThis is an 18-month temporary position, with a start date no later than March 1, 2024, and a planned end date of September 30, 2025. The salary for this fellowship is $75,000. Limited funds are available for travel.
