Description

The Kinkaid School seeks a 6th grade Academic Enrichment teacher to join its Middle School team starting August 2024.

The MS Academic Enrichment teacher will teach an academic enrichment course to all 6th grade students, supporting the development of study and executive functioning skills, and encompassing social-emotional learning, technology skills, and grammar/writing skills, extending the existing 5th grade Academic Enrichment curriculum. Reporting to the Head of Middle School, the 6th grade Academic Enrichment teacher will promote high levels of learning in collaboration with the 6th grade team to teach learning skills engagingly and effectively using various teaching methods and curriculum resources. 

The Middle School Academic Enrichment Teacher embraces and advances the principles set out in Kinkaid’s core documents: mission and core values, DEI commitment and strategic plan, Middle School Educational Philosophy, and the Portrait of a Teacher.

The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,400 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade), and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Kinkaid offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design and deliver a sixth grade level curriculum for a one-year course consisting of engaging and innovative lesson plans covering study skills specific to the KMS curriculum, social-emotional learning, basic grammar instruction, and technology skills, including our one-to-one laptop program and appropriate AI usage/prompt engineering
  • Teach four sections of 6th grade Academic Enrichment classes
  • Foster a dynamic learning environment that encourages generalization of skills to the academic curriculum, self-advocacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving
  • Utilize a mix of instructional strategies and resources to promote understanding for students with diverse learning styles
  • Assess and track student progress, provide feedback, and adapt lesson plans 
  • Design and implement lessons that connect to the 6th grade curriculum, specifically supporting projects assigned in other content areas
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and families to support student learning and well-being
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of 12-14 Middle School students
  • Commit to duties required in supervising students in grades 5th-8th by following established school safety and disciplinary rules
  • Availability to participate in after-school activities, including clubs and sporting events

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education or a relevant field (Masters degree preferred)
  • Proven experience teaching in a middle school environment
  • Experience as a Learning Specialist or comparable capacity is preferred but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about fostering a love of learning 
  • Maintain integrity to the mission of the school and the MS Educational Philosophy
