This position is responsible for providing veterinary care to sick, injured or otherwise compromised mice. This position assists the clinical veterinarians to ensure the health and welfare of mice at the Laboratory.
Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for providing hands on and didactic training to JAX people at all levels, from animal care technicians to Ph.
D. scientists, and assisting in the development and improvement of the curriculum as needed. This is a highly visible position;
the incumbent must represent The Jackson Laboratory at the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Veterinary Assessment and Treatment :
Working with guidance from a CMQ veterinarian or designee, prioritizes assessment of clinical conditions based on type of illness or injury and severity.
Performs physical evaluations on sick / injured or otherwise compromised mice.
Accurately identifies common clinical conditions in laboratory mice.
Routinely treats sick / injured mice; monitors the animals' response to the prescribed treatment plan
Provides ongoing communication with JAX research staff members
Maintains accurate and complete medical records.
Training :
Well trained students require multiple teaching styles and hands-on work with significant assistance from the Trainer, Animal Use.
The Trainer provides training or assists in the training of the following courses (among others) :
JAX New Hire Orientation
Concepts of Animal Use Orientation
Biomethods
Basic Surgery
Laboratory Animal Science I and Curriculum Development :
Incumbent continuously reviews the course content to ensure JAX is in-line with the most recent industry standards. Incumbent prepares for classes which include setting up the lab space and records maintenance.
Proper class preparation ensures students have well thought-out, easy to use visual aids to refer to, and the class stays on the right path throughout the course
Performs other duties as assigned which may include, but not limited to :
Special projects such as clinical investigations and disease surveillance
Assist with writing and / or revising new or existing policies and procedures associated with animal use training.
Assist the AWC with pilot studies as requested
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have graduated from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program and able to obtain a State of Florida Certified Veterinary Technician license and minimum of two years of rodent experience.
Associates degree required, BS degree preferred 2 years or related experience
Knowledge of normal anatomy, physiology, diseases, and can readily distinguish between sick, healthy and / or otherwise compromised mice
Skilled in performance of common biomethods and surgical techniques
Must possess the interpersonal skills (verbal and written communication) necessary to interact with people representing a variety of levels of sophistication across the organization.
Demonstrated ability to create databases, analyze data and generate reports using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other computer software
Ability to work a flexible work schedule; participate on a rotational on-call roster for after business hours, holidays and weekends;
and travel occasionally.
Ability to obtain and maintain AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) within two years.
Ability to take independent initiative, work independently, and exercise good judgement in decision-making
Posses a strong attention to detail along with patience and flexibility to adjust teaching approaches and techniques that accommodate students with different capabilities, skill levels, and levels of confidence.
Pay Range : $48,198 - $80,696 based on total years or related experience
