Job Description

IIMD Legal Department, URM and Afghan Arrivals Programs Reports to: Immigration Program Director Type: Part-time, 2-year contract IIMD a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has met the needs of Southeast Michigan's diverse immigrant populations for over 100 years. Our staff comes from diverse backgrounds and believes in improving access to legal services for the immigrant community. IIMD is the recipient of a 3-year grant for Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URMs) through the State of Michigan's Office of Global Michigan. As part of the grant, IIMD provides immigration legal services to URMs in need of immigration legal services, and will also provide support to Afghan Arrivals in Southeast Michigan as needed. The Staff Attorney's primary directive will be to assist the immigration legal team to meet the grant goals, by assisting clients with an array of immigration legal needs. Job Responsibilities: * Support all aspects of asylum and unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) programs within the immigration legal program and adhere to program mission, philosophy and goals; * Engage with clients and assist them with filing applications with USCIS and Immigration Court; * Representation for clients in Immigration Court, USCIS Asylum Office, and USCIS Field Office; * Determine client eligibility for immigration benefits (citizenship, family-based or humanitarian-based immigration); * Organize and attend community-based workshops to promote IIMD legal services; * Reach out to partner organizations for client referrals; * Keep up-to-date case notes in online case management system; * Track client data for grant-related activities; * Maintain paper and digital files for all clients and update as needed; * Track billable hours for grant invoices; * Provide a positive, respectful, and client-centered environment; * Collaborate with community partners to provide immigration legal services to target communities; * Attend and actively engage in staff meetings; * Participate in professional development (in-house and as provided by other entities), including peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and supervision to law students; * Collaborate with IIMD staff to ascertain participants' eligibility and readiness for various services and manage referrals; * Reliably complete and submit all reports as required by Program Director; * Prepare and participate in special projects as requested by the Program Director. Qualifications & Skills: · Law degree (JD) with experience in immigration, specifically for minors, asylum seekers, and removal experience. · Admitted attorney to MI State Bar. · An understanding of and respect for cultural differences. · Strong writing and research abilities; experience in drafting, negotiating and reviewing legal documents. · Well-honed interpersonal skills, communication, and public speaking skills. · Ability to deliver results for multiple, competing priorities. · Analytical thinker with strong conceptual and research skills. · Dynamic leader who displays sound judgment and attention to detail. · Ability to work independently and as part of a team. · Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. · Able to appear in immigration court and USCIS in Detroit for clients as needed. · Familiarity with US immigration system, particularly family-based and humanitarian-based immigration. · Familiarity with using Google Suite and Zoom. · Familiar with using case tracking systems to manage client data. · Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) proficiency. · Foreign language skills (Spanish, Arabic, or Farsi/Dari/Pashto) strongly desired. Notes: Position is part-time until May 2025, with continuation dependent on grant funding availability. Salary, commensurate with experience. Primarily in-person, with occasional in-state travel.
