The Legislative, Prevention and Coalition Coordinator is responsible for advancing alcohol and
drug use prevention legislation and awareness through coalitions and legislative advocacy. This
position tracks state and local legislation and coordinates advocacy efforts for policies and laws
supporting prevention of alcohol and drug use in the African American Youth Community. This is a
part time contract position for 25-30 hours per week
Duties & Responsibilities:
● Advocate and lobby legislators on community concerns, laws or legislation addressing health disparity and
advancing health equity.
● Attend state and national legislative meetings and workshops advancing alcohol and drug prevention education and
sharing the learnings with African American Youth Communities and Coalitions.
● Develop a community coalition strategy with key stakeholders, organizations, elected officials, and community and
civic leaders to specifically address alcohol and drug use in African American Youths.
● Perform research and collect data on alcohol and drug consumption in African American Youth to come up with
effective alcohol and drug prevention strategies.
● Partner with the Community Coordinator to prepare and present alcohol and drug use prevention presentations to
local middle and High Schools, and community organizations.
● Partner with the Community Coordinator to create alcohol and drug prevention education materials and distribute in
schools, communities and through social media.
● Partner and network with alcohol and drug retailers and other related coalitions to build alliances addressing alcohol
and drug use in the African American Community
● Ensure the effective accomplishment of grant deliverables and expenditure of funds through the legislative and
coalition activities.
● Develop a database of coalition and community partners, and stakeholders.
● Lead, plan, implement, and facilitate all community coalition meetings with assistance from other Highland Haven
NU team members and coalition members.
● Meet monthly with the Highland Haven NU program Manager to review plans for the month.
● Provide thorough and detailed written monthly updates to the Program Manager regarding events and the outcomes,
duty performance, status of upcoming events, and resources needed for outreach programming.
● Prepare expense requests prior to travel to the Highland Haven program manager for review and approval.
● Provide brief overview and rationale for conferences, workshops and training attended in relation to the grant
deliverables.
● Perform other duties and assignments as identified by Highland Haven NU manager.
Qualifications & Skills:
● Associate or bachelor’s degree in health care and Legislative Policy work or 2 years of experience as aPolicy Advisor or
Coordinator
● Youth Advocacy and Navigator
● Strong business sense/Organized and detail-oriented
● Proficient using Microsoft Suite (Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint etc.) and other program-related software
● Exceptional Public Speaking, communication skills, both oral and written/Excellent customer service skills
● Teamwork and motivational skills
