This position will be in support of the Complex Exposure Threats Center (CETC), a sub-center of the Washington DC War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC). The mission of CETC is to serve as the Veterans Affairs’ consultation Center to study and evaluate complex and novel military exposures with poorly defined or unknown pathologies.

HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Associate II to apply bioinformatics and data mining technologies to the study computational solutions to biobehavioral problems, using a whole host of computational technologies, in an interdisciplinary environment. The position will provide analysis and mining support to integrative biomedical research for CETC projects. The position will be expected to produce findings and recommendations to clinical teams and scientific conferences.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides analysis and mining support to integrative biomedical research for CETC projects.
  • Attend necessary meetings and scientific discussions to formulate relevant materials, including weekly staff meetings, as necessary.
  • Serves as an expert resource to multiple study teams about data modelling, algorithm development, feature engineering, and model validation processes.
  • Develops strategies for meeting research goals.
  • Uses technological expertise to support data science program requirements.
  • Takes the lead on analysis involved in the development of research findings and presentations in their area of expertise and aids others as directed by the DC WRIISC Director.
  • Write reports, abstracts, manuscripts, and present research and development results in scientific and technological conferences.
  • Provides technical mentorship to less experienced bioinformatics staff as appropriate.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the DC WRIISC Director. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in bioinformatics or related data sciences fields.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Capable of working both independently and as a team player.
  • Analytical capability of data from major proteogenomic experimental platforms including NextGen sequencing and mass-spectrometry proteomics, and array-based data.
  • Capable of using data analysis application software such as R and SAS. Familiar with a relational database such as Oracle or MySQL.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and capable of writing abstracts, manuscripts, and reports.
  • Understanding of clinico-pathologic data is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.


Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation:
  • The likely salary range for this position is $88,600 USD to $120,000 USD annually based on a 40-hour work week. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.


Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
