The Gorman Group is Hiring a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician - Level 2 (Amsterdam, NY) Near Amsterdam, NY

Position Overview

  • Maintenance Technicians maintain company assets by completing inspections, diagnostics, adhering to preventative maintenance schedules and correcting vehicle deficiencies per manufacturer specifications while upholding records utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS).

Primary Duties

  • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, and hydraulics.
  • Makes adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and final drives.
  • Preforms routine preventative maintenance services to all company assets including tractors, trailers, distributors, pickups, paving/construction equipment, and admin vehicles.
  • Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
  • Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by performing NYS inspections and emissions tests as required.
  • Cleans any area or component of equipment prior to service, if needed.
  • Responds to all assigned requests for roadside assistance or repair of equipment.
  • Accepts ownership for accomplishing new and different requests such as quality and safety related equipment modifications.
  • Updates equipment records by annotating services and repairs in CMMS system.
  • Safely uses all power and hand-held mechanic’s tools and any other shop equipment following manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Attends outside training classes as required, at company's expense.
  • Cleans and secures work area at the end of each shift.
  • Conducts Maintenance Operator Care Equipment Audits.
  • Supports all Gorman Reliability Program (GRP) efforts and meetings.
  • Promote and follow 5S Standards for facility housekeeping and safety initiatives.

Addition to Level 2 Technician

  • Serves as a lead troubleshooter for shop repairs and is the first point of contact for assistance with complex diagnostics.
  • Diagnose and repair in depth issues using diagnostic software such as Cummins Insite, Detroit Diagnostic 8, Widos, FCAR or similar diagnostic software.
  • Ability to work on all makes of heavy equipment as well as heavy trucks, trailers and medium duty vehicles.
  • Follows diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications; establishing personal networks.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have three (3) years direct experience as a diesel or heavy-duty equipment mechanic.
  • Must have a valid Class A driver’s license.
  • Must be self-motivated to be able to take directions and repair equipment in the field.
  • Ability to stay out of town when circumstance permits.
  • Ability to interpret maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams and other documents.
  • Ability to safely operate all company equipment (both on-road and off-road equipment).
  • Willingness to initiate and embrace change.
  • Ability to operate shop machinery such as drill press, bench grinder, hydraulic press, welding and cutting equipment, forklifts, etc.
  • Experience participating in a maintenance and reliability optimization program such as TPR, TPM, Lean Maintenance, Six Sigma, etc.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, handle/feel objects, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch/crawl, talk and listen.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee may be required to work outdoors, in various weather conditions, and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.
  • The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
  • The employee is required to use appropriate PPE and follow all safety guidelines at all times.
