Responsibilities

Summary

The Certified Peer Counselor promotes growth, recovery and wellness to residents receiving mental health services. This position works closely with clinical team to guide and support members through the recovery process; assists residents with developing recovery skills in the areas of self-esteem, conflict resolution, assertiveness, identifying personal strengths and other recovery skills. This position also plays an integral part in creating an environment or peer culture within the treatment facility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the delivery of cognitive behavioral curriculum in a group setting focusing on the areas of motivation for change, social adjustment, personal management, social skills development, cognitive restructuring, and development of problem-solving skills.
  • Establishes and maintains a network of community-based services including state agencies, employment services, employers, housing resources, behavioral health providers and mental health providers.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with state, county, and federal program administrators who can assist residents upon their release.
  • Support residents in navigating the public financial support with insurance and other community resources.
  • Works to ensure residents obtain eligible benefits and proper identification. Transports residents to community service events such as job fairs, employment centers, and clinics using Company vehicle.
  • Identifies members for peer council and advocates with collateral contacts.
  • Assists residents in working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps they need to achieve their goals for recovery.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required. Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist “CPS” issued by the state in which the position functions.
  • One (1) year of experience as a volunteer, facilitator or counselor in a community rehabilitative setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others and handle difficult interpersonal contacts.
  • Valid, active driver’s license.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
