Position Summary: The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is seeking a creative and driven Communications Manager to support and implement communication initiatives in support of the Foundation’s brand, including education, preservation, and public access programs at Taliesin and Taliesin West. The Communications Manager will be the driving force in producing content for the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly magazine, advertising collateral, and other communication pieces for the Foundation. The Communications Manager will act as the main point of contact with media and the Foundation’s PR agency. The Communications Manager also serves as the department’s traffic manager through project management software. The position requires strong writing and editing skills as well as a service-oriented attitude for internal and external clients. This position requires some evening and weekend hours for event coverage and media access. 

Essential Functions

Writing:

  • Serves as Managing Editor of The Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly.
  • Writes, curates, edits articles and content for Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly magazine as well as advertisements, collateral, and other communication efforts to drive attendance and program and event participation.
  • Working with the Digital Marketing Manager creates content for the Foundation website and blog, and social media posts. 

Traffic and Project Management:

  • Acts as main project manager for all marketing and communication projects, including the creation of the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly magazine.
  • Oversees and manages all of the department’s content calendars through our project management system to ensure deadlines are met. 
  • Serves as traffic manager for incoming requests from all departments, prioritizing, assigning responsibilities and timelines through project management system. 
  • Supports department with execution of marketing plans and advertising strategies that increase audience engagement and size.
  • Tracks and evaluates analytics and other audience-specific data to help guide comprehensive and effective strategic marketing and communications plans that may include promotions, advertising, digital initiatives, social media, email, direct mail, and other collateral. 
  • Proactively suggests and works with team to execute creative ways to grow subscriber base, increase tour visitors, communicate impact of Foundation by creating compelling content to demonstrates alignment with audience needs and interests. 

Public Relations:

  • In conjunction with the Foundation’s outside PR firm, drafts compelling communications tailored for a range of internal and external audiences, and pitch stories to media as needed. 
  • Drives interest in the Foundation, and in Frank Lloyd Wright, through comprehensive media relations including interviews, press engagements, estate access for press crews, etc.

Supervision:

  • Supervises work-flow and engages volunteers assigned to the Marketing & Communications department.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, or a closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Three or more years of experience in marketing, communications, and/or public relations.
  • Evidence of outstanding writing, editing, research, and speaking skills with demonstrated experience in writing for a variety of media. Background in journalism and print media is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with and affinity for the mission of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. 
  • Ability to assess or adopt organization’s “voice” quickly, accurately, and creatively.
  • Self-reliant, results-oriented, and proactive with ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
  • Excellent judgment, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation, conflict resolution, and management skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, e-mail, Internet, and a variety of social media; knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, WordPress, and video editing software preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Travel: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to travel to Wisconsin and/or other locations.

OSHA Risk Classification for COVID-19 Exposure: Medium Risk: This position requires frequent/close contact with the public and other co-workers and is therefore determined to fall within the Medium Risk category as defined by OSHA. To further minimize risk, employees are required to follow the Foundation's Safe and Healthy Workplace guidelines and related personal and facility infection control policies.
