The Fedcap Group is Hiring a Financial Counselor Near Brooklyn, NY

Position Summary:

Responsible for providing assistance to Jobs-Plus members in setting personal financial goals and developing strategies to achieve those goals, accessing safe and affordable financial services, building assets, navigating the often-complex territory of debt management and credit building, and addressing financial emergencies. Serves as a mentor, liaison and troubleshooter based on the members’ career plans. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Observes all policies and procedures and attends all required trainings and certifications as scheduled.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with local financial institutions. 
  • Coordinates with the Career Development Specialists to assist members in understanding and exploring available financial options available to increase financial security.
  • Understands and explains the benefits of NYCHA rent incentives and Earned Income Tax Credit to members.
  • Explains the importance of child support, conducts child support assessments and makes referrals to HRA’s Office of Child Support Services, as necessary. 
  • Utilizes the Single Stop USA, Inc. (SS) benefit screening platform to determine the benefits available and assists the member in obtaining desired benefits.
  • Coordinates with the Career Development Specialists regarding financial issues that adversely impact the member’s engagement and completion of career plan goals.
  • Provides services in a flexible manner according to member’s schedule to maintain engagement and completion of programs.
  • Coordinates with the Career Development Specialists to outreach to members who have difficulty with maintaining engagement in training programs.
  • Stresses urgency and ownership, guiding members through a learn-by-doing process during their program engagement.
  • Document’s activities, participation, progress and completion of training programs in the case records and both HRA and FedcapCARES™ computer system.
  • Works with the Career Development Specialists and Community Coaches to provide outreach to members who fail to report to an appointment to identify and help address and underlying issues to encourage member to re-engage.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field, such as psychology, education, social work, vocational rehabilitation, or occupational rehabilitation from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years successful work experience in finance, financial education, financial planning, social work, coaching/mentoring, teaching, or other related field, and capacity (including language skills) to serve the program’s population.
  • Familiarity with social and human services organizations a plus.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and be sensitive to maintaining confidentiality. 
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. 
  • Experience working with public assistance recipients, formerly incarcerated individuals and those affected by the challenges associated with poverty.
