The Family Place PCS is Hiring an ADULT ESL INSTRUCTOR - Evening Near Washington, DC

PART-TIME EVENING ADULT ESL INSTRUCTOR - HYBRID/REMOTE

Title: Part-time ESL Instructor

Supervisor: Chief Academic Officer, TFPPCS

Category: Part-time Non-Exempt Position (16 – 19 hours/week, evenings only);

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. plus 4 hours weekly planning time

Immediate hire; potential contract extension and FT position for SY 24-25

The Family Place Public Charter School (TFPPCS) seeks to improve the literacy and workplace skills of adults who want to improve their income and careers so that they and their families can have a better life, find employment, and become more active in their community. TFPPCS serves more than 200 adults/year, most of whom are Hispanic/Latino, other people of color, women, and unemployed or underemployed adults.

The Part-time ESL Instructor will teach a diverse online classroom of adult ESL learners, some of whom have low literacy or interrupted education, and will work to achieve the mission of The Family Place PCS to help students and their families become self-sustaining, employable and engaged in their community.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach an adult ESL class four evenings a week, Monday – Thursday from 6-9 p.m.; includes 4 hours weekly planning time
  • Instruct students remotely using a distance learning platform such as Zoom
  • Support and/or monitor occasional in-person activities such as orientation, technology instruction, and CASAS testing
  • Develop daily lesson plans with clear objectives and post lesson plans on Google Drive
  • Incorporate CASAS competencies, life skills English, CCRS, and workforce development guidelines under WIOA into lesson plans and instructional activities
  • Monitor individual student and class CASAS performance and modify instruction or practice as needed using TOPSPro generated reports
  • Work with tutors, interns, and/or volunteers in the classroom
  • Track daily attendance (in-person and remote) and record daily instructional hours for each student in Quickbase
  • Monitor and follow up on student absences weekly and refer cases of chronic absence to case management, the CAO, and/or registration
  • Set up and use a WhatsApp group to communicate regularly with students
  • Provide updates about student progress or needs to supervisor
  • Attend staff meetings and team meetings and participate in professional development
  • Additional afternoon hours are available for tutoring individuals or small groups of students

Requirements:

  • Must be living in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and able to work in-person occasionally
  • B.S. in Education, or a related field; MA in Adult Education or TESOL highly desired
  • 2-3 years of experience teaching ESL to adult immigrants
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment with other educators
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to manage and motivate a classroom of adult immigrant learners
  • Commitment to working with low-income, low literacy immigrant families and children
  • Experience using CASAS Competencies to lesson plan and target instruction
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace or Microsoft Office Suite software
  • Strong digital literacy skills and ability to learn and implement new technology in the classroom
  • Spanish highly desired
