SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

This opening invites individuals to apply for a Lecturer or Clinical Assistant Professor position. Core Faculty Members are employees of The Family Institute at Northwestern University with significant teaching, supervising and governing responsibilities in the COAMFTE-accredited Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy Program (MSMFT Program), housed within the Center of Applied Psychological and Family Studies (CAPFS). They hold clinical faculty appointments in the Department of Psychology at Northwestern. Core Faculty Members are also responsible for clinical caseloads in keeping with TFI policies and at a level negotiated yearly within their contracts.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. This position is open to individuals who qualify at the rank of a Lecturer or Clinical Assistant Professor.

2. Design and delivery of an outcome-based education framework that exists in the context of program and institutional missions;

3. Delivery of measurable student learning outcomes consistent with the development of systemic, culturally competent, empirically informed, and ethical Marriage and Family Therapists;

4. Assess the academic and professional competencies of students and all aspects of the program’s operation, such that program improvements can be made based on data and feedback collected;

5. Core faculty operate within the guidelines and requirements of the MSMFT program, the policies of Northwestern University, and the AAMFT code of ethics;

6. As part of the core faculty governing body, support the program’s mission, goals and student learning outcomes, including the acquisition of knowledge and skills within the practice of systemic frameworks;

7. Attend and contribute to core faculty meetings and quarterly cohort program meetings;

8. Take an active role on the program admissions committee from recruitment to open house support, and review of applications and applicant interviews;

9. Participate and provide leadership in program sub-committees;

10. Serve as part of a collaborative team of faculty governance and demonstrate flexibility in role and responsibilities within a changing structure;

11. Serve as the academic advisor to MSMFT graduate students through their course of training from student orientation to graduation;

12. Independently serve as an instructor for the program and be willing to participate as a guest lecturer for various courses as needed;

13. Serve as a clinical supervisor for the clinic students;

14. Work with and support a variety of student issues including academic and professional development and remediation;

15. Engage in scholarly activities including but not limited to having a research lab and mentoring students in their scholarly pursuits;

16. Exhibit ongoing efforts to advance and receive academic promotional ranking within the department of Psychology at Northwestern University;

17. Participate in activities that support the profession of marriage and family therapy that go beyond the program tasks;

18. Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to support, teach and contribute toward the online branch of the MSMFT program as needed;

19. Maintain an active clinical caseload at a level negotiated yearly within contract and attend clinical services meetings;

20. Perform ad hoc duties as assigned.

Requirements

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Hold a current license or be license eligible as a Marriage and Family Therapist (or its equivalent) in the State of Illinois;
  2. Current Approved Supervisor designation with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) or its equivalent; 
  3. Exhibit cultural sensitivity and strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion;
  4. Demonstrated commitment to an integrative, systemic and empirically-informed approach to clinical practice and the training of therapists;
  5. Evidence of ability to teach within the discipline of marriage and family therapy;
  6. Experience in supervising graduate students in clinical settings;
  7. Demonstrated experience in being able to maintain a clinical practice;
  8. Demonstrated leadership and maturity in addressing complex educational and training issues;
  9. Demonstrate flexibility in teaching both on ground and online as needed;
  10. Present collegiality, willingness and an initiative to work collaboratively with the other members of the core faculty team as well as teaching and supervising faculty as required.

MINIMUM HIRING SPECIFICATIONS

  1. Graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or related field (e.g., clinical psychology, human development, developmental psychology, family science, etc.);
  2. Experience teaching at graduate level;
  3. Licensed to practice (or be license eligible) as a therapist in the state of Illinois.
