    DIVISION:
    The Goodwill Excel Center, founded in 2014, is the first free public charter high school in Texas that provides adults ages 18-50 the opportunity to earn their high school diploma, complete an in-demand professional certification, and begin post-secondary education. The Excel Center offers programming that is specific to the adult learner experience such as, accelerated academics and flexible scheduling, special programs, and resources, and supportive services to help students remove barriers they may encounter during their educational journey. Currently, The Excel center has three Austin-area campuses that serve both day and evening students in addition to two Justice Education campuses, located in Lockhart and Overton, TX.
    POSITION SUMMARY:
    The primary role of the Counselor Interventionist is to coordinate the placement of residents in an educational program suited to their needs. This position will also assist in campus administration and support students’ academic progress. The Counselor Interventionist will guide students from onboarding through graduation planning to career exploration and facilitate interventions when academic progress is in jeopardy. This position will also coordinate all testing and counseling activities alongside the Director of Education in compliance with all partner directives.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Oversee onboarding of new residents and students, orienting them to their academic program and cultivating resiliency, problem-solving skills, and a growth mindset.
    • Maintain the appropriate number of participants per class.
    • Maintain status as General Educational Diploma (GED) examiner with Texas Education Agency (TEA) and General Educational Diploma Testing Service (GEDTS).
    • Coordinate all testing for the facility, including GED and STAAR.
    • Monitor students’ academic progress and coordinate interventions for students with academic or attendance problems
    • Review student transcripts to build graduation plans that can guide the creation of student schedules.
    • Direct students in career exploration exercises to develop post-release career plans.
    • Use students’ career interests to research relevant opportunities for candidates with criminal records.
    • Develop community contacts for post-release services (housing, etc.), and help link students to these services as they approach release
    • Work with Director of Career Education to counsel students about career training opportunities at the facility
    • Assist campus director in creating a safe, orderly, and purposeful campus climate hospitable to education.
    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Teach classes as needed, especially in Excel advising course sequence (MAPS, Career Readiness).
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
    This position has no supervisory responsibility.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s Degree
    • SBEC School Counselor certificate (or eligible for a probationary certificate)
      • Probationary certificate requirements
        • Bachelor’s degree or higher
        • Letter from college, university, or alternative certification program indicating acceptance.
    • Demonstrated ability to promote student success through teaching, advising, or counseling.
    • Two years of experience in teaching, life coaching, case management, counseling, advising, or a related field.
    • Experience working with high school-age students in urban, non-traditional, and/or adult education settings.
    • Experience working with English Language Learners and immigrant students.
    • Strong sense of professionalism, administrative ability, systemic understanding of student dynamics and socioemotional approaches, and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Must possess an understanding of marginalization and how it impacts those Goodwill serves and employs.
    • Superior leadership, supervisory, customer service skills, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks or crises effectively.
    • Exhibit respect for diversity of thought and have the experience to advance it in teams/organizations.
    • Must demonstrate a maturity of practice using the 7 pillars and principles of servant leadership.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Dual or multiple subject certifications.
    • 3-5 years of successful coaching or teaching experience.
    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
    Starting at $48,000 depending on experience and qualifications. This position is assigned to Leave Group 2.
