The Detroit Institute of Arts is Hiring a Community Arts Coordinator Near Detroit, MI

JOB TITLE: Coordinator, Community Arts

DEPARTMENT: Studio

REPORTS TO: Director, Studio Programs

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Occasional

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Director, Studio Programs, the Coordinator, Community Arts helps visitors find personal meaning in art by teaching high-quality single and multi-session art-making classes and workshops at the DIA and off-site locations. Coordinates and/or co-creates public art projects with museum staff and community stakeholders. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Arrange, coordinate and schedule off-site programming for tri-county region.
  • Coordinate and/or co-create community-based art projects with partnering organizations and museum staff.
  • Assist in the coordination of annual community-based exhibitions in Learning Center Hallway.
  • Create and facilitate artmaking experiences that align with strategic goals, programming themes and exhibitions at the DIA and offsite locations for all ages.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners to develop learner-center art making experiences.
  • Communicate with community partners and educatorsto prepare some aspects of field trip implementation.
  • Prepare materials for classes and help maintain studio space, supplies and equipment. 
  • Maintain digital organization of program protocols, processes, curricula, project plans, and multi-media documentation.
  • Compose and submit program marketing copy.
  • Serve on museum committees.
  • Advise the Director of Studio Programs on program refinement, coordination, methods, scheduling, special considerations, and related logistics.
  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art education, or related degree required. Three (3) years of teaching/facilitation experience and working knowledge of art making and studio equipment required. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

  • Working knowledge of art making and studio equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer service.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.
  • Ability to communicate with and manage relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills to identify critical information and complete projects and goals.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changes in priorities based on operational need.
  • Must have demonstrated active listening and communication skills and an ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail and produce accurate results. 
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams. 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
