Job Description

The Daily Beast is seeking a talented, motivated, and dependable editorial fellow to join our Washington, DC, newsroom for a one-year intensive program. Open to recent college graduates, the fellowship is an exciting opportunity for emerging political journalists to learn how a newsroom works while gaining hands-on experience.

Fellows will perform research, reporting, and writing with maximum support from editors. A Fellow might assist full-time staff on stories. The Fellow will be coached on how to cover politics stories, and will be provided with feedback after assignments. Fellows may “shadow” a reporter on assignment to gain familiarity with the protocols of news-gathering. Over time, Fellows will be expected to become more independent, and begin pitching and executing on their own stories. In addition, Fellows will have the opportunity to work on stories and projects across a wide variety of political beats and topics to gain the type of hands-on experience they will need for successful careers in news.

Responsibilities

• Research/write items every day on politics and finance. 
• Break exclusive news, interview newsmakers, and deliver sharp reporting and analysis.
• Contribute to breaking news coverage of major political events.
• Examine copy for accuracy, checking all factual information, quotes, and statistics.
• Produce additional video, photo, or social content as needed.

Qualifications

• Experience writing breaking news from a previous internship or campus publication
• A voracious news diet and appetite for current affairs and politics
• Prior knowledge of web publishing and using a content management system
• Comfort meeting daily deadlines
• A deep interest in, and understanding of, federal, state, and local politics
• An understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures, communities, and racial and ethnic identities.

Pay Range Salary:

The pay range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000 annually. 

The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, performance and other factors. The range listed is just one component of The Daily Beast’s total compensation package. The Daily Beast provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401K employer matching program, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
