About Our School: The Cove School is a non-public therapeutic day school for students with learning disabilities located in Northbrook just 35 minutes north of Chicago. Cove students come from 60 different public schools throughout the Northern Illinois area. Families can also choose to fund tuition privately.
For over 75 years, The Cove School has been a national leader within its field, creating an exceptional environment where children with learning disabilities “learn how to learn” and develop the emotional and social skills to reach within, achieve above, exceed beyond, and maximize student growth. Classes are kept small. Teaching is flexible and varies according to the individual student’s learning style. A team of onsite specialists work collaboratively to provide students intensive, integrated related services.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Licensure: B.A./B.S. in Education with Illinois LBS1 teaching license or LBS1 endorsement, experience working with students with learning disabilities. Degree, certification and/or experience in the field of music and experience with theater is preferred.
Responsibilities:
The Cove School music teacher is responsible for teaching music and theater education to students in grades K-8th grade in addition to two High School electives and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music and theater instruction. They help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments, listening and acting. Additionally, ESY classes in areas that pertain to their skillset are available.
I. Preparation Skills
Plans a balanced music/theater program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
Becomes familiar with students’ IEP accommodations and goals.
Selects and uses methods, materials and equipment.
Organizes learning experiences in a logical developmental sequence.
Creates an emotional climate conducive to learning and one that fosters the Cove therapeutic milieu.
Maintains student attendance records.
Provides assignments for classroom instructional assistants.
II. Implementation Skills
Teaches general music/theater to students K-8, including musical skills, appreciation and history, and theater.
Teaches two additional electives at the high school level.
Differentiates music/theater curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.
Exhibits knowledge of subject matter to implement objectives.
Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
Structures the classroom environment effectively, maintain constructive control.
Collaborates with classroom teachers to integrate other content when appropriate.
Utilizes alternative and creative ways to achieve objectives.
Relates to students with respect to their individual needs.
Plans, rehearses, and directs students in two (Elementary & Junior High) theatrical and musical programs for school and community
Plans and directs the annual Variety Show.
Supports any needs that may arise with the High School theatrical and musical program.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
Consciously maintains effective working relations with others.
III. Evaluation Skills
Records, evaluates and reports on-going student growth and development in the area of music.
Writes progress reports.
Participates in parent conferences.
IV. Non-classroom responsibilities
Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse
Participates in curriculum planning and program development.
Participates in student staffings.
Attends faculty meetings.
Communicates with parents on a consistent basis between grading periods.
Participates in school functions, e.g., Open House, etc.
Performs routine tasks, student attendance, etc.
Collaborates with teachers regarding the students' goals, programs, and progress.
Participates in school committees.
Other duties as assigned.
