Job purpose
As an essential member of the Executive team, the Medical Director is responsible for overseeing the provision of physical health assessments and medical services for clients at The Courage Center, both as a direct provider and also as the lead overseer of all medical and clinical services provided at the center. The Medical Director will establish and maintain appropriate standards for treatment, assume responsibility for the medical aspects of quality care, and provide clinical supervision to an experienced staff of clinical care providers.
Responsibilities Shared with the Executive Team
- Design, develop and implement strategic plans for the organization in the most cost effective and time-efficient manner.
- Responsible for both the day-to-day running of the organization and developing business plans for the long-term future of the organization.
- Leadership role for the organization, and in addition to their office-based work, they fulfill a motivational role for members of The Courage Center Staff.
- Motivate and mentor members of the management team and chair meetings.
- Lead the organization and develop its organizational culture.
- The Executive Director and Medical Director will report to the Advisory Board on a semi-annual basis to keep the board informed of the state of the organization. The Advisory Board will offer suggestions and ideas about how to improve the organization.
Additional Managerial Responsibilities
- Ensure that the program adheres to credentialing requirements, as outlined by MaineCare Regulations Sect 65 and Sect 93, as well as ensure that the program maintains ethical and professional standards in all its operations and guidelines.
- Oversee the development and revision of medical policies for The Courage Center, including establishing and reviewing written protocols for medication management and delivering regular training to Courage Center staff in how to carry out these policies.
- Provide medical direction and supervision to medical and clinical providers in accordance with state regulations and standards of practice, ensuring that all medical staff receive appropriate development, in-service training and performance reviews.
- Participate in reviews of all medical staff, performing utilization and risk management activities, monitoring appropriateness of ongoing treatment and identifying trends and service delivery patterns.
- Help to develop the program’s non-clinical staff and programming in collaboration with the other leadership of The Courage Center.
- Meet regularly with risk management and quality assurance to review incident reports, grievances, and complaints to identify and implement processes to reduce clinical risks and safety hazards and optimize the program’s standards and practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide clinical support and guidance for diagnostic and MaineCare coding accuracy, adherence to funder authorization and reimbursement guidelines.
- Utilize the electronic health record system to complete and supervise all medical record documentation in a clear and timely manner.
- Complete all other required forms and certifications necessary for the Courage Center to provide high quality patient care and treatment.
- Consult with other treatment professionals, as needed to ensure comprehensive care is provided for each patient; refer for additional treatments and/or levels of care as necessary.
- Consult with The Courage Center program staff as necessary regarding client medical needs, health status and/or treatment plan.
Direct Medical Care Responsibilities
- Provide quality, patient-focused medical assessments and care to clients admitted to The Courage Center, both in-person and via Telehealth, approximately 3-5 hours per week (varies by census).
- Utilize the electronic prescription system to prescribe medications as medically necessary, ensuring that prescribing practices meet current standards of medical care. Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of prescribing practices; engage in informative and interactive informed consent discussions with the patient. Completes all medical record documentation and is expected to provide clear and timely documentation of services performed.
- When medically necessary, order diagnostic studies including, but not limited to diagnostic imaging studies and diagnostic laboratory studies; must document the specific medical problem the study is being ordered for; interpret the diagnostic studies in a timely manner and ensure clear communication of the results to the patient. The ordering, interpretation and communication of study's results must be documented in the medical record.
- Order, evaluate, adjust and terminate prescription of medication dosages using sound medical, ethical and responsible discretion.
- Conduct follow-up evaluations on an as needed basis for medical evaluation, follow-up and adjustment of prescriptions.
Qualifications
- Graduate of accredited MD, DO, or NP program of accredited university
- Valid Maine Medical License
- Eligible or Board Certified in Addiction Medicine preferred
- Experience with substance use disorder and psychiatric patients, including clinical treatment and medication management preferred
- Minimum three years of experience in program management and administration
- Successful background screenings through local law enforcement, Maine Dept. of Law Enforcement, and FBI
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance, and successful motor vehicle driving record background check

- Proficient in Microsoft and Google applications (word processing, spreadsheets, database, and emailing)
