Description

Under supervision, to perform law enforcement support and security functions not requiring peace officer training or assignment of a Deputy.
Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take an online examination tentatively scheduled for the week of June 12, 2024, through June 18, 2024.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Monitors electronic security and screening devices including upright metal detectors and baggage x-ray machines to prevent weapons from entering Court facilities, and to ensure court security;
  • Conducts hand searches on personal property and will confiscate contraband and other prohibited items including chemicals and biological hazards, or anything that may be used as a weapon;
  • Controls access at Courthouse entrances and prevents the admittance of unauthorized persons into secured areas;
  • Supports Deputies in areas of public safety;
  • Provides information to the public regarding courtroom locations and rules;
  • Monitors pertinent radio traffic and calls for additional resources such as Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS);
  • Submits daily activity reports and compiles statistics;
  • Retrieves supplies from various locations;
  • Issues and delivers items from storeroom;
  • Orders, stores, and issues law enforcement equipment;
  • Stores property, equipment, or other articles in appropriate storage areas;
  • Picks-up and delivers patrol vehicles for service, repair, or to install equipment;
  • Coordinates building repairs;
  • Coordinates the set-up for special functions held within the Sheriff's Office;
  • May testify in court;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent;

and

One (1) year of full-time security screening, public contact, radio communication (via handheld radio or equivalent) experience, and/or experience in a law enforcement or security environment.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic arithmetic calculations and functions;
  • Principles of dealing with a variety of people;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
  • Common computer systems and applications;

Ability to:

  • Remain calm and use common sense in emergency situations;
  • Enforce rules and regulations with firmness and tact;
  • Understand written and oral instructions;
  • May access and operate various automated criminal justice information systems to aid badged staff’s investigations;
  • Exercise independent judgment and work with minimal supervision;
  • Deal tactfully with persons from a variety of cultural, educational, and occupational backgrounds who may be experiencing stressful situations;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies;
  • Use computer systems and applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry moderately heavy and bulky items.
