Description

Under supervision, to operate a variety of heavy trucks and equipment; to act as a lead worker on jobs not involving heavy equipment; or, to perform specialized tasks in the maintenance of roads and expressways, associated landscaped areas and related structures.

Typical Tasks

  • Operates small dozers (D4 and under), loaders under two yards capacity, tractor mowers, mechanical spreaders, large rollers, three axle dump trucks, water trucks over 2500 gallons capacity, mechanized street sweepers and truck-type front loaders;
  • Hauls a variety of road construction and maintenance material;
  • Sprays herbicides;
  • Waters roadsides;
  • Operates equipment in a variety of road maintenance and construction tasks;
  • Acts as lead worker on a small crew performing such specialized tasks as constructing, erecting and repairing guard rails, bridges, retaining walls, drain pipes and boxes, fences and road signs;
  • Installs and repairs irrigation systems;
  • Cuts and trims trees;
  • Plants and transplants trees;
  • Acts as lead worker on a patch crew not involving heavy or sophisticated equipment operation;
  • Operates compressors, chain saws, berm machines and similar non-mechanized equipment;
  • Operates light equipment, spray rigs and "Hyster" type booms;
  • Makes and maintains time and material reports;
  • Receives daily work details;
  • Assigns crew members to specific tasks;
  • May maintain warehouse inventory through the Department's database and checks out tools, materials and equipment;
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment;
  • Trains personnel in safety practices, road maintenance methods or equipment operation;
  • During emergencies may perform manual tasks in clearing creeks, channels and landslides;
  • May be assigned to cooperative crews, within the Road Maintenance Division, during emergency conditions within the County;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training and experience, which demonstrates possession and application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Experience Note:
The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are attained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in road maintenance work including operating trucks and construction equipment.
OR
Two (2) years of experience as a Road Maintenance Worker II with the County of Santa Clara.
Special Requirements:
Upon appointment, possession of a Class B (or higher) Commercial Drivers license with no restrictions, a Tanker Endorsement and any other licenses or endorsements required to operate the equipment assigned to the position.
The ability to qualify for and maintain a County Drivers Permit.
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, safety practices and equipment used in road construction and maintenance;
  • Operation, preventative maintenance, capabilities and limitations of road construction equipment;
  • The use of herbicides.
Ability to:
  • Operate three axle gasoline or diesel powered trucks and various types of heavy equipment;
  • Lead and instruct personnel in road maintenance tasks and the operation of equipment;
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, direct, evaluate and provide feedback on work performed by others;
  • Understand oral and written directions;
  • Demonstrate strength, agility and endurance;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Work in various traffic, weather and surface conditions.
