The Colburn School is Hiring a Residential Advisor Near Los Angeles, CA

Summary of position:

The Resident Advisor is responsible for the support of residential life functions in the residence hall, housing approximately 140-160 high school through college graduate school students. Through the supervision of the school’s Conservatory and Music Academy students, the RA helps to build a community that is based on mutual respect, accountability, and support. The RA is expected to maintain a safe living environment in the Residence Hall that supports the intensive efforts of Conservatory and Academy students as musicians while providing appropriate support for personal needs.

The Resident Advisor is a twelve-month, part-time, live-in position that reports directly to the Manager of Residential Life and Residential Summer Programs This position includes administrative and on-call responsibilities, which include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Residency in the dormitory is a requirement of the position.

Essential duties and responsibilities: include the following. Please note the responsibilities for summer programs are similar, but not the same as the responsibilities and tasks during the academic year.

Residential life:

  • Provide residential supervision and oversight for students.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for primary oversight of students residing in areas specifically assigned to the Student Resident Advisor.
  • Create, promote, and attend both community building and educational programming for the Conservatory and Music Academy.
  • Participate in RA training programs.
  • Provide supervision for student activities both on and off campus, and participate in events as appropriate.

Crisis Intervention/ On-Call Rotation/ Student Conduct:

  • Participates in Primary On-Call Rotation, providing 24/7 coverage during each shift.
  • When On-call, maintain a 10-min response time.
  • Performs bed-checks for Academy students, when on-call.
  • Follow protocol when responding to incidents.
  • Maintain awareness of safety and emergency procedures and respond to emergency/safety situations.
  • Support the enforcement of residential policies.
  • Provide appropriate and timely follow up to incidents.
  • Serve as a college representative during non-business hours.
  • Submit thorough incident reports in a timely manner.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Administrative tasks will be assigned each week depending upon the season and needs of the department.
  • Other assigned duties.

Facility Management:

  • Manage room condition reports during move in and move out.
  • Conduct building walk through inspections during move in, move out, and breaks.
  • Submit work orders in a timely manner.
  • Work with facilities staff to resolve maintenance issues.

Staff Representation and Trainings:

  • The Resident Advisor is expected to attend and actively participate in all trainings, meetings, and orientations for the position.
  • Participate in the selection of students for leadership opportunities.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Attend one-on-one meetings with their reporting manager.
  • Attend all departmental and cross-departmental sessions and workshops, as required.
  • Assist in safety drills and training.

Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • 2 years or more experience as a resident advisor/assistant or similar position.
  • Must maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality of information as it pertains to residents and staff discussion
  • Required skills include leadership, supervisory, organizational and communication skills, as well as ability to work closely with a team.
  • Must be able to maintain professional boundaries whenever dealing with students and representing the
  • Ability to adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Colburn School Employee Handbook and the Catalog & Student Handbook.
  • Ability to manage budget for small projects and events.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of programs.
  • Ability to interact with students, including providing supervision and social activities.
  • Ability to work with various departments of the School, including Security, Engineering, Janitorial, Café, Mail room, etc.
  • Ability to function under pressure in crisis or emergency situations.
  • CPR/AED certification required (may become certified after being hired).

Pay range for this position:

Monthly Stipend: $850.00 plus meal allowance and housing.
