The City of Overland Park is Hiring an Engineering Technician I/II Maintenance Near Overland Park, KS

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT:

This position supports Maintenance Division project and plan development; assists with collection of infrastructure surveys for asset management purposes; reviews condition of infrastructure, primarily as a result of citizen requests, to help with scoping and phasing future Maintenance Division projects; provides ad hoc construction inspection of Maintenance Division projects; and supports the snow program as a CDL driver.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares plans for Public Works storm sewer, street construction, and maintenance projects using computer-aided-drafting system (CAD) or Bluebeam. Scope includes performing field surveys, measurements, creating plan sheets, assigning applicable standard details, creating custom details as needed, and calculating quantities for construction contract line items.

  • Supports asset management program through data collection of field assets, assists in upload of data into the asset management database, assists with asset audits on the quality and timeliness of work orders and data entry.

  • Assists Engineer, Supervisors, and Crew Leaders with assessing work requests, recommending repairs, prioritizing replacement, updating Lucity/OP Cares records, and responding to residents.

  • Performs field surveys in support of Public Works activities. Reviews plats, maps, and construction plans. Collects field data using a total station, digital level, and data collector with survey software. Researches property ownerships and legal documents. Investigates existing right-of-way and easements through documents located in the county courthouse or accessed through city and county computer records.

  • Assists with ad-hoc construction inspection of maintenance division projects.

  • Organizes and manages archived construction plans and documents.

  • Assists the public with questions or requests for information requested over the phone or in person. Answers questions, retrieves copies of plat sheets, city maps, storm sewer sheet, aerial sheets, and any other prints required.

  • Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferred Associate’s degree in the following field(s) of study: Autocad, GIS Mapping applications, surveying, or other certification relevant to job requirements is preferred.

Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record. Must have or obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 12 months of employment with the City.

EXPERIENCE:

Five years of combined education and experience in engineering support, drafting (manual and CAD), construction management, and/or surveying.

OR

Two years of experience and an Associate’s Degree in a field related to engineering support, drafting (manual and CAD), construction management, and/or surveying.
