Job Summary

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and maintenance on light and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, trailers, and marine engines/equipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by employees in
this classification is only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and rebuilds all systems and components on a variety of light and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, and trailers.
  • Installs, uninstalls, diagnoses, and repairs aftermarket accessories, equipment, and truck bodies.
  • Performs diagnostics and major/minor repairs, component rebuilds, and electrical system repair on hydraulic systems.
  • Determines the extent of repairs and condition of vehicle/equipment to recommend the most cost-efficient and practical solution.
  • Utilizes diagnostic equipment, service manuals, wire diagrams, flow charts, pinpoint tests, and computer technology.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections, adjustments, repairs, and lubrication services.
  • Completes all the customers reported issues on a work order and performs a quality control inspection prior to completion.
  • Effectively prioritizes workload, logs services performed, and turns in work orders.
  • Maintains, repairs, and utilizes fleet shop equipment, tools, facilities, and vehicles.
  • Performs duties in the fleet shop and at various locations throughout the city.
  • Always acts with integrity, is respectful towards coworkers and customers, and goes above and beyond their assigned duties.
  • Properly cleans and disposes of hazardous chemicals and fluids in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Utilizes a welder, plasma cutter, and oxygen/acetylene torch to make repairs, and fabricate metal parts and tools.
  • Tracks and maintains all certifications and licenses and stays up to date on new and relevant information.
  • Represents the City’s core values and always maintains a high level of customer service.
  • Always utilizes proper safety equipment and procedures in accordance with all safety regulations and laws.
  • Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma, or GED equivalent, and 0 to 3 years work experience in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Police and fire shop require a High School diploma or GED equivalent, and 3 to 6 years of work experience in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Police and fire shop must pass an FBI background check and maintain a clean record.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Commercial Class B Driver’s License or obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  • Police shop requires a valid Texas Class C Driver’s license.
  • Specific technical training, certifications, or license endorsements may be required for some job assignments.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements

Required Knowledge of:

  • City organization, policies, and procedures.
  • Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.
  • Federal, state, and local laws pertaining to hazardous chemical/waste disposal.
  • Safety equipment and practices in a shop environment.
  • Vehicle/equipment systems and components and how they work.
  • Diagnostic equipment and repair procedures.
  • Basic electrical principles.
  • Basic hydraulics and hydraulic systems.
  • How a preventative maintenance program works and why it is important.
  • Tools and equipment used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Metal fabrication, welding methods, and procedures.


Required Skill in:

  • Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing a variety of vehicle/equipment systems and components.
  • Computerized diagnostic tests on vehicles/equipment.
  • Diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems and components.
  • Performing routine maintenance and tire repairs.
  • Repairing automotive electrical systems.
  • Reading and interpreting technical manuals, flow charts, pinpoint tests, and wire diagrams.
  • Proper use and maintenance of all shop tools and equipment.
  • Proper use of safety equipment.
  • Customer service.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Welding, metal fabricating, and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
  • Complete a 6-month probation period.
  • Have a valid Texas Class B CDL within 6 months of employment start date.
  • Have an insurable driving record.
  • Police shop – Have a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License and have an insurable driving record.
  • Display safe working habits.
  • Proficient in routine maintenance, preventative maintenance inspections, repairs, and tire repairs.
  • Proficient in the diagnosis and repair of most major systems and components on vehicles/equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Extensive knowledge in the diagnosis and repair of all major systems and components on vehicles and equipment.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation and successfully trains techs and drivers.
