The Youth Center Director, under the long-range administrative direction of the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation for Recreation, oversees the Youth Center program by developing, implementing, and evaluating captivating after-school and summer programs for the participating youth in the Middleton Area.

The Youth Center Director directs and executes a youth program that provides care by focusing on fostering of youth leadership, nurturing of positive decision-making, working towards ensuring school success, asset building, and promoting active community and civic engagement by program youth attendees. The Director's role spans not only supervising the Youth Center staff, interns, and volunteers, but also orchestrating a extensive efforts towards academic support and experiential enriching activities for participating youth. These activities may include, but are not limited to, visits to the city aquatic center, various field trips, and impactful service-learning opportunities.

The Youth Center director is responsible to execute and the mission of establishing an infrastructure in Middleton that empowers youth to cultivate skills, exercise leadership, and form meaningful relationships with adults. The role’s overarching goal to enable youth to not only thrive but discovers their full potential is operationalized through the leadership of the Director.

During the school year, the Youth Center is open from 3:36 pm to 6 pm on all school days. The Youth Center Director will be on-site from 3:15 pm to 6:30 pm on all school days. The Youth Center’s summer programs run for eight weeks, with staff on-site from 11:30 am to 6 pm Monday-Friday. The Youth Center Director plans and supervises School Days Out activities during the school year and Friday Fieldtrip Days and Adventure Camps during the summer. Additionally, the Director participates in program planning, administrative tasks, supervisory duties, and professional development. The position involves planning several special events for the Youth Center and collaborating with the Recreation Department to plan and execute youth programs and events throughout the year.

The Director will consult with youth, and organizations that represent youth, to determine their needs and develop programs in response to those needs.

  • Schedule: Full-time/40 hours per week; Normal work schedule of 10:30am-6:30pm with occasional evening and weekend work.

Job Functions

Essential Functions

  • Provide safe, supervised, and enriching after school and summer activities:
  • Communications:
    • Ensure the Youth Center website remains current with pertinent program and registration details.
    • Foster and sustain connections with local organizations for youth.
    • Oversee the enrollment process for all youth participants.
  • Ensure the implementation of all programs aligns with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise Youth Center staff, interns, AmeriCorps members, substitutes, and volunteers.
    • Plan and facilitate staff debrief and planning meetings.
    • Ensure continuous and adequate supervision of students.
    • Maintain Youth Center policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate the mentoring program:
    • Train staff to provide weekly one-on-one mentoring for a designated group of students during the school day.
    • Strategically plan mentor sessions with a focus on academic support, social-emotional learning, and leadership development.
    • Communicate with mentee's parents/guardians and school staff as needed.
  • Attend trainings and participate in professional development as directed.
  • Attend weekly/bi-monthly meetings with Recreation Division and Assistant Director of Recreation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Considerable knowledge and familiarity with the organization, administration, and operations of public youth support programs,
  • Working knowledge office administration fundamentals and principles.
  • Considerable knowledge and possession of cultural awareness ideals and sensitivity issues.
  • Thorough understanding of positive youth development principles.
  • Working knowledge of with positive behavior management and restorative practices.
  • Awareness of public sector operations, funding mechanisms, and program structures desired.
Skills
  • Proficient in basic computer and internet usage, with a working knowledge of Google drive and Gmail
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of youth and families.
  • Adept at problem-solving.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Abilities
  • Proficient in administering youth programs.
  • Strong team-building capabilities.
  • Ability to provide tutoring in all core subject areas (math, literacy, science, and social studies) up to an 8th grade level.
  • Bilingual at conversational level preferred, bilingual Spanish at conversational level highly preferred.

Education, Training and Experience

  • An Associate degree in education, recreation, social work or closely related field is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in education, recreation, social work or closely related field is preferred.
Training
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified preferred, or ability to obtain within three months of hire, is required.
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor Certified highly preferred, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, is required.
Experience
  • A minimum of five (5) year of progressively responsible experience working with youth is preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
