The City of La Porte Water Department is Hiring a Water Quality Supervisor Near La Porte, IN

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION. The Water Quality Supervisor is responsible for performing water testing and monitoring throughout all phases of the treatment process and into the distribution system to ensure water quality and compliance with all regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Water Director.

Maintains detailed computer records and organized document files for all activities as required including:

Collecting and analyzing water samples at sample stations and homes for bacteriological testing.

Conduct periodic water tests to determine chemical levels and add or dilute chemicals as needed.

Ensure well water is safe to drink before it gets to the treatment plant.

Perform tests to ensure compliance with all water quality regulations including periodic testing as required by State and Federal Standards.

Maintain laboratory with all necessary equipment and supplies. Ensure lab apparatuses remain in sterile condition and are properly maintained.

Create and maintain accurate records regarding test results and general lab upkeep including creating detailed records such as time samples were collected, placed in the incubator, date the different media was received, degree of sterilization, and overall time the sample was in the incubator.

Analyze and prepare water audit.

Ensure operators are properly trained in safety techniques regarding the use of chemicals.

Ensure maintenance of fluoride and chlorine pumps and wells throughout the City.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. LANGUAGE SKILLS. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to citizens or employees. Able to speak, interpret and write the English language.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel. Must reach with hands and arms and be able to taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include being able to see close, distance, color, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE. Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical related field from a four-year college or university or two years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. WT3 Certification preferred.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to chemicals, weather conditions, extreme cold and heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS. Valid Driver’s License required. WT3 Certification preferred or must be able to obtain within 9 months. DSL Certification as required by the State of Indiana.
