CITY OF ELKHART – JOB DESCRIPTION
Parks and Recreation
POSITION: Park Ranger
DIVISION: Rangers
STATUS: Part-time
CATEGORY: Hourly

FLSA: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Lead Ranger
JOB SUMMARY
Park Rangers are responsible for the oversight of the City’s parks and enforcement of park rules and policies. Rangers are expected to acquire knowledge of the geography in the City, the procedures of the department, and be ready to communicate with public about programs. Park Rangers must be a positive role model with exemplary leadership skills, quality communication skills, and a positive, friendly demeanor. The position of Park Ranger is required to work evenings and weekends patrolling parks which in part are dictated by seasonal programs and events.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily patrol of Elkhart City parks and facilities.
Ensuring public safety within the parks system.
Ensure the timely locking of park restrooms & needed facilities.
Enforce city ordinance violations, inform and educate the public about
park amenities and rules.
Document damage to equipment, hazards and vandalism.
Complete daily ranger report of parks patrolled and participate in monthly staff meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in reducing park rule violations through education and
enforcement where appropriate.
Assist with Parks cleanup in Spring and Fall.
Locate and coordinate placement of signage throughout park system.
Conduct yearly inventories of equipment in parks and pavilions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Previous parks and Recreation or public safety experience (law enforcement, fire fighter, EMT, etc.)
Post high school training and/or education in criminal justice or related field
Preference given to retired military, police, or national service members such as AmeriCorps or Peace Corps.
Must have valid driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Must possess a demonstrated level of ability and experience in areas
of oral and written communications.
Ability to work independently.
Must be able to effectively prioritize daily work functions.
Knowledge and skill in the use of tools, equipment, and vehicles associated with assigned responsibilities
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time when required.
Ability to walk the parks each shift.
Must have the ability and history of remaining calm and rational when confronted with stressful or volatile situations.
Must have a positive demeanor when in contact with the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work environment is generally performed in an outdoor setting. The Park Ranger will typically work evening hours during the week as well as weekends from 3pm to 11pm. General scheduling should be coordinated with part-time/seasonal rangers as to provide maximum coverage during peak park usage, especially with events.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED
The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
