The City of Charleston, SC is Hiring an Emergency Management Specialist Near Charleston, SC

Summary

We are looking for an Emergency Management Specialist to join the City of Charleston! In this role, you will guide and execute the day-to-day operations and activities of the Emergency Management Division and develop and implement strategies to enhance the overall emergency management enterprise for the state’s most populous city, with more than 150,000 citizens in a region that hosts over 7 million visitors annually.

Examples of Duties

  • Function as a 24/7 on-call duty officer for the Emergency Management division, including during off hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Communicate and coordinate regularly with others to receive weather and emergency related information and relay it to the appropriate personnel.
  • Notify City leadership, response personnel, and other staff about threatening weather and other conditions through verbal and written situational updates.
  • Assist in coordinating multi-departmental mitigation, preparedness, and response.
  • Support the Incident Commander, Command and General Staff, and City leadership as a section chief or equivalent. during activations for disasters and emergencies.
  • Train employees and MEOC staff on software and information systems used to maintain situational awareness and to communicate with other emergency operations centers.
  • Develop, conduct, and document training and exercises with city staff, other municipalities, counties, and state agencies.
  • Compile emergency management training opportunities monthly from emergency management agencies and disseminates them to and promotes them with City staff.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, and trainings to advance understanding and application of Incident Command System capabilities and emergency management principles, practices, and developments.
  • Develop and update the City’s Emergency Operations Plan, annexes, policies, procedures, and talking points on special emergency management related issues.
  • Enhance awareness and preparedness among citizens and visitors by developing and conducting preparedness presentations for vulnerable populations, neighborhood organizations, civic groups, and private and public organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Public Safety, or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education equaling at least 4 years in a related field
Certifications & Training
  • Within 1 year of employment, obtain and maintain all Incident Command System (ICS) courses required to work in the Municipal Emergency Operations Center, including IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-775, ICS-300, ICS-400, and the independent Study Professional Development Series (IS-120, IS-230, IS-235, SI-240, IS-241, IS-242, IS-244)
  • Within 3 years of employment, obtain and maintain SC or IAEM Certified Emergency Manager certificate
  • Valid state issued driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in emergency management or emergency services
  • Additional FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses
