The City of Cedar Park is Hiring an Animal Control Officer Near Cedar, TX

The City of Cedar Park

City of Cedar Park is currently seeking a full time Animal Control Officer. Performs various activities associated with the enforcement of city and state regulations pertaining to animals within the City limits. Provides education and information to the public regarding animal related issues such as protecting residents from stray or vicious animals and related diseases; operates the animal control center; patrolling for loose, stray or sick animals, captures, impounds, and when necessary, disposes of animals; and maintains records and prepares and submits reports.

The Position

  • Maintain, clean and disinfect animal control equipment and vehicles; implement routine schedule of required maintenance; repair or schedule the repair; replacement of faulty equipment;
  • Patrol, capture and impound domestic animals and non-domestic animals that are not appropriately restrained, vicious, injured animals or that are creating health/safety hazards as prescribed by City ordinances and the Texas Department of Health; also responds to citizen complaints regarding same;
  • Investigates reported complaints regarding animal cruelty and abuise, animal bite instances, animal nuisances, and other violations of City ordinances and State laws; including issuance of warnings and citations for violations as appropriate;
  • Provide for the humane care and feeding of impounded animals; maintain the temporary holding animal facility and grounds in a safe and sanitary manner; ensure adequate food and water is dispensed on a daily basis; provide or obtain appropriate treatment for wounded/sick animals; clean facility and grounds on a routine basis;
  • Enforces all applicable State and City laws and ordinances pertaining to rabies, impounding, and humane treatment of animals;
  • Quarantines animals suspected of biting for rabies observation, prepares specimens for submission of rabies testing;
  • Removes dead animals, transporting and disposing of properly;
  • Write reports and citations; performs computer data entry as needed; issues warnings and/or citations to owners of animals that do not comply with the City ordinances.
  • Educate citizens to promote health, safety, and responsible pet ownership; and
  • Appears and testifies in municipal and/or county court in cases involving violations of city ordinances and state laws relating to animal control.
Other Important Duties
  • May serve as Senior Animal Control Officer in that person's absence;
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

High school graduation, or GED equivalent,
At least one year of animal control experience; Or,
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Basic Animal Control Certification by Texas Department of Health within one (1) year of employment.

Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge: Must have a general working knowledge of animal control regulations to include chemical compounds and animal behavior; health regulations; city ordinances and state laws relating to animal control; equipment operations; and record preparation.
Skill/Ability: To perform essential functions of the job, must be able to deal effectively, efficiently, and in a pleasant manner with distraught and irate citizens; make competent decisions under stress; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written oral instructions and follow oral and written directives, lift, push, pull, and drag equipment and animals up to 75 lbs. without help several times daily; dispose of animals, work indoors, outdoors in confined spaces, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain; work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather, fume, dust/mist, noxious odors, chemical, solid waste substances, animal feces, urine, saliva, and the sight of blood; must be able to be exposed to insects, noxious plants and snakes, assorted wildlife and vicious animals and handle livestock; read, write, see, talk, hear, climb crawl, kneel, run, sit, squat, bend, stand, stoop; and to walk in excess of 5 miles per day while pursuing animals and carrying equipment. Be able to work assigned afternoon shifts, including weekends and holidays; respond to after hour emergency calls on a rotating basis; simultaneously handle multiple tasks; identify various animal species/breeds, and maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, and acceptable driving record.
