About The Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. About the Position

As one of the Teaching Pathway programs that CBED offers, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) is a 4-week summer apprenticeship program that prepares high-school and college-aged aspiring educators for the teaching profession by way of providing literacy intervention to elementary school scholars. This summer, we plan to have 4 FSLA sites at elementary schools in Philadelphia, with a goal of 60 scholars per site and 240 scholars in total.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Program Operations from the central office, the FSLA Recruiter conducts grassroots on-the-ground recruitment to meet our scholar enrollment goals. They will form strong collaborative relationships with school leaders and school faculty, engage families at school events or during dismissal, and support in application submission.

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with leaders and faculty at the 4 school host sites to share program information and elicit their support with recruitment
  • Gather information on parent events the schools are hosting
  • Table at school events or during dismissal to share information about the program to families
  • Support families with completing scholar applications in real time

Dates & Hours

This is an in-person temporary position that we are seeking to fill immediately. We anticipate the end date to be around June 15th, 2024 or upon full program enrollment, whichever date comes first.

We anticipate the work days/hours to be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 2:30-4:30 pm. However, this is flexible and subject to change based on school events and needs.

Bonus Opportunity

The FSLA Recruiter is able to earn $20.00 for every scholar they recruit who submits an application and enrolls in the program.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to engage with different stakeholders including parents, school staff, teachers, and administrators in a personable and professional manner.
  • A relentless go-getter who is committed to accomplishing goals with ingenuity and by any means necessary
  • Technical skills and ability to utilize the scholar application platform.
  • Belief in the mission, vision, and core values of FSLA and CBED.

*The role details are subject to change based on our programming needs.
