Position Title: Host at Canopy’s Luna Lounge and Salt Yard Café

Location: Canopy Portland Waterfront

Department: Food & Drink

Accountable To: Sr. F & D Manager, F & D Managers, Restaurant Managers

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Objective of Position

Receives and seats guests, assists in running the dining room, maintains order and cleanliness. Thank and show appreciation to guests departing the outlet.

Essential Functions

  • Welcome guests to the venue in a warm and professional manner
  • Ask how many in their party and whether they prefer inside, outside, or bar seating
  • Provide accurate wait times and monitor waiting lists
  • Determine which table to seat them considering the guests’ preference, the party size, and which server is next in rotation.
  • Mark on RESY where you intend to seat them.
  • Escort customers to assigned dining or bar areas
  • On your way to the table engage in conversation with the guest; asking if they have been in before, are they staying at the hotel, are they here for any special occasion, etc.
  • Provide the correct number of menus and announce their server’s name
  • make sure that the guests are as comfortable as possible (if it is cold, provide blankets and heated seats)
  • As guests are leaving, ask them about their experience and wish them a good evening. Remember that as host you are the guests’ first and last impression of at any F & D outlet!

Other

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Associates with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, Associates may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the company. In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required.

Upon employment, All Associates are required to fully comply with company rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of the facilities. Anyone who violates company policies and expectations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Supportive Functions

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the requirements of the hotel:

  • Coordinate with servers about available seating options
  • Maintain a clean reception area
  • Cater to guests who require extra attention (e.g. children, elderly)
  • Assist servers as needed
  • During service there should be at least one host at the stand to greet every guest that enters.
  • Solely oversee RESY, waitlist, server rotation, directing where parties are to be sat.
  • Oversee the floor, updating RESY of sat tables and pace of service; to assist in accurate waitlist quote times and table turns.
  • Maintain the bathroom’s appearance and cleanliness throughout the shift; do check every half hour to hour; wipe down sinks, restock low or empty toiletries, rid the floors of debris, and tend to trashcans.

Safety and Security

  • Be knowledgeable about harassment in the workplace and appropriate reporting steps
  • Be knowledgeable and comply with electronic communications procedures and cyber security
  • Should be able to identify and address deficiencies in cleanliness and safety standards and notify appropriate team members of same
  • Be aware of suspicious activities and report to a member of management immediately when present
  • Properly handle and account for keys.
  • Adhere to all state and federal requirements for the sale of alcohol.
  • Adhere to all Health Department requirements.
  • Ensure protection of guests’ room numbers.
  • Ensure and properly handle guest personal and financial information to ensure security.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the hob, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be able to communicate in and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace with or without communication technology
  • Ability to be focused and self-motivated; there is minimal supervision.
  • Ability to participate as a part of a team
  • Ability to demonstrable customer-service skills
  • Ability to stay organized in a busy environment
  • Knowledge of area restaurants, and entertainment venues and events a plus

Physical Demands

  • Most work tasks are performed indoors
  • Must be able to move up to 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Must be able to stand for 6 to 10 hours
  • Must be able to exert well-paced ability to reach other departments of the hotel on a timely basis
  • Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment
  • Must have finger dexterity to be able to operate equipment

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent work experience. Host experience a plus, preferably in a hotel environment.

Grooming

All associates must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per Property Standards and must dress in professional appropriate attire.
