Job Summary Under general supervision of the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) Department Chair, this position is responsible for managing and maintaining laboratory spaces and instruments as well as support instructors with lab and student project activities. The incumbent is responsible for protecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing specialized equipment, as well as arranging equipment service visits, and maintaining precise equipment records. This position develops and improves lab safety protocols, conducts safety training for students and faculty and participates in the design and construction of custom equipment, sensors, and research systems to meet specific needs of educational and research projects. The incumbent coordinates the usage of shared lab resources between classes and research, handles equipment orders, installations, calibrations, repairs, and provides guidance to students on lab and equipment use. Exercising independent judgment, innovation, and leadership, this position streamlines lab operations and contributes to equipment acquisition decisions in coordination with the department chair and faculty. Department technical and instructional support staff in the College of Engineering are part of a broader instructional and equipment support team and work together collaboratively to innovate and develop best practices. |
Department Summary The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo supports separate undergraduate and graduate degree programs in each discipline (CE and ENVE). The mission of the CE/ENVE Department is to prepare its students for successful careers in civil and environmental engineering by providing a high quality, practice-oriented education that emphasizes design project experiences, "hands-on" laboratory activities, and teamwork. The department currently serves about 800 undergraduate students and over 50 graduate students. Over 20 full-time faculty and part-time instructors teach lecture, laboratory, and activity courses focused on construction, environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering. The CE/ENVE Department manages separate instructional laboratories under each of these subdiscipline areas. Students working in these laboratories have the opportunity to experiment on water, air, soil, rock, aggregates, concrete, timber, steel, pavement, fluids, and advanced materials using well-maintained and state-of-the art testing equipment. |
