The Bronx Charter School for Children (BCSC) is Hiring an Elementary School Enrichment Teacher (Art, Music) Near Bronx, NY

The Enrichment Teacher at The Bronx Charter School for Children is a valued member of the school community as a member of the Enrichment Team.

  • Instructional Skills: Create rigorous lessons and units of study that promote critical thinking through a creative and artistic lens; maximize learning time through effective classroom management; use varied instructional techniques and apply developmentally appropriate strategies.
  • Community Oriented: Constantly seek out resources and strategies to meet student needs; communicate and collaborate effectively with all members of the community and fully strive to achieve the TBCSC mission.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute an age appropriate, sequentially developed, standards based, culturally responsive visual arts or music curriculum for grades K-5.
  • Introduce and expand student knowledge and elements of design and principles of art/music.
  • Develop and/or utilize rubrics to assess and record students' learning and growth.
  • Demonstrate and instruct students in different approaches to drawing, painting, sculpting as well as other forms of modern, digital or mixed media.
  • Organize materials and create systems to ensure proper use and care of arts /music materials by students.
  • Prepare students to present and display completed works at least twice per year.
  • Partner with community and cultural organizations in order to help students interact with professionals in the field, make real world connections and increase awareness of careers in visual arts/music.
  • Maintain school structures by enforcing school and class rules.
  • Make meaningful connections through dance to academic content when content naturally aligns.
  • Differentiate instruction for students with special needs
  • Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom.
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with students and families
  • Actively participate in team meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute.
  • Accept ultimate responsibility for the progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setback.
  • Presents as a consummate professional in regards to punctuality, attendance, and integrity.
  • Actively seeks out feedback from leadership and colleagues and uses it to improve performance.
  • Perform any other duties as may be required by administration.

Major Performance Expectations

  • Facilitate the creation of an art scope and sequence by grade while thinking about the overall required accomplishments by fifth grade
  • Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine students’ progress or to make suggestions for improvement

  • Introduce and expand student knowledge of elements of design and principles of art/music.

  • Display student work throughout the building, and create an inviting, print-rich environment
  • Partner with community and cultural organizations in order to help students interact with professionals in the field, make real world connections and increase awareness of careers in visual arts.
  • Differentiate instruction for students with special needs.

  • Actively participate in team meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute.

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Media Arts, Art Education, Music or related degree. Master's degree in related field and NYS Teaching certification preferred.
  • At least two years of successful teaching experience in an urban setting with a proven track record of extraordinary student outcomes.
  • The ability to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and challenged.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals.
