The Blake School is Hiring a PK-12 School Nurse Near Hopkins, MN

Job Description:

The Blake School seeks to hire a skilled and dynamic PK-12 School Nurse. This is a full-time, year-round position. The ideal candidate will be responsible for refining and supervising student health care systems and providing direct nursing services to students across our two-campus, PK-12 school. In addition to maintaining student health records, training office staff and faculty and communicating with parents about student medical needs and emergency plans, the school nurse will collaborate with the leaders of Blake’s global programs and summer programs around student health and safety protocols. Strong candidates will demonstrate deep intercultural competence and have substantial experience serving children and adolescents with diverse identities, including––but not limited to––gender, sexual orientation, culture, race and religion.

Required Experience:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates current student health systems and makes recommendations for cohesive, consistent PK-12 school health program that promotes a safe and healthy environment
  • Provides basic medical treatment for illness or injury
  • Actively serves and affirms all identities represented at Blake through developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed care based on best practice and current research in child development and public health
  • Trains and supervises office staff on in-school medication management to include storing, administering, documenting and monitoring the effectiveness of prescribed medications
  • Reviews and oversees protocols for field trips and school-sponsored overnight travel
  • Consults with directors of global programs and summer programs about health protocols
  • Utilizes Magnus Health electronic health system for reviewing and maintaining student health records
  • Understands and adheres to all pertinent HIPAA requirements
  • Coordinates student emergency health plans, related parent/guardian communication and faculty training (e.g. for seizure, allergy or diabetes action plans)
  • Consults with Student Support Teams to assess student needs and craft interventions or support plans
  • Coordinates with Blake’s non-public school nurses around student health and safety
  • Attends or facilitates family meetings pertaining to individual student health needs in collaboration with administrators or other school staff. This includes coordinating with non-public school representatives (e.g. nurses or special education staff) for the purpose of ensuring students with health impairments or disabilities receive services for which they are qualified.
  • Coordinates student immunization compliance process, including completing MDH immunization reports
  • Oversees mandated and optional screening (e.g. eyesight and hearing) for the purpose of referring families for additional assessment if needed
  • Communicates with the athletic trainer and athletic director about individual students and broader athlete health issues
  • Coordinates employee training around relevant student-facing health practices
  • Orders and tracks necessary medical supplies for the health offices, main offices, security stations and classrooms
  • Plays a central role in emergency preparedness and response teams
  • Communicates about the control of communicable diseases
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), current Minnesota Registered Nurse (RN) license, Public Health Nurse (PHN) certification and licensure as a school nurse from the Minnesota Board of Education
  • Knowledge of Minnesota Department of Health guidelines and policies
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certifications
  • Understanding of HIPAA requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Warm, personable, professional demeanor and ability to build trust and rapport with constituents
  • Experience supporting children ages 4-7 and/or experience in an early childhood educational setting
  • Adept with technology, including Google platforms
  • Strong assessment, analytical and documentation skills, including the ability to define problems, collect data, draw conclusions and create action plans
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with school personnel and families
  • Understanding of current trends in nursing and of literature in the field of school health
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
