What is this job all about?

The Registered Dietitian (RD) provides nutritional assessment, diagnosis, and individualized counseling services, as well as group education, case management, and consultation with other healthcare professionals. 

The RD is responsible for promoting optimal health through personalized dietary plans and lifestyle modifications based on evidence-based practices and client needs. 

This position is salaried/exempt.

That’s nice, but what will I actually be doing?

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments and develop individualized dietary plans based on clients' medical history, dietary habits, behavioral concerns, sensory challenges, and lifestyle factors.
  • Provide evidence-based nutritional counseling to clients with diverse health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and obesity.
  • Utilize various tools and techniques to assess clients' nutritional status, including anthropometric measurements, biochemical data, and dietary intake analysis.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams, consisting of physicians, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Oversight RN, and support team to develop interdisciplinary care plans and ensure continuity of care for clients.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client interactions, including progress notes, treatment plans, and nutritional interventions.
  • Develop individualized meal plans that minimize choking hazards while meeting nutritional needs and dietary preferences.
  • Educate clients, caregivers, and staff on choking prevention strategies, including proper positioning during meals, supervision level during meals, appropriate food textures and consistencies, and safe swallowing techniques.
  • Monitor clients' tolerance of modified diets and adjust meal plans as needed to optimize safety and nutrition.
  • Provide training and support to staff members involved in meal preparation, feeding assistance, and monitoring clients' dietary intake to ensure adherence to choking prevention protocols.
  • Maintain open communication with clients and their support networks to address concerns related to choking risk and promote a safe dining environment.
  • Provide training and support to individuals and the support team who are at risk of potential rights limitations due to food restrictions based on medical conditions. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of a supervised dietetic internship program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) credential conferred by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • State licensure or certification as required by the jurisdiction of practice.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition science, including macronutrients, micronutrients, and dietary guidelines.
  • Ability to assess nutritional needs and develop personalized dietary plans for individuals with various health conditions and dietary preferences.
  • Proficiency in using nutrition assessment tools and software for dietary analysis and meal planning.
