The Arc Mid-Hudson is Hiring a College Support Specialist - School-to-Work - NEW! Near Kingston, NY

We have a NEW opportunity in our School to Work program for a College Support Specialist, who will provide transitional services for high school-age students with disabilities with the goal of preparing them for employment and independence within the community. Services are provided in a college setting (SUNY Ulster) and at community businesses.

This is an ideal role for a motivated, self-starter who is able to work independently, and develop and foster relationships with our community partners. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must in this highly visible position.

Responsibilities for this position will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Create and teach lesson plans focusing on adult living skills, work readiness and career exploration. Implement a variety of teaching modalities to engage students and appeal to various learning styles.
  • Conduct outreach to offices on campus and local community businesses to develop opportunities for work experiences.
  • Daily support to facilitate students being actively involved in campus life and work settings. Support includes: Assisting students to be active members of classes they are enrolled in, teaching soft skills, task training, driving, travel training, daily counseling, self-direction & stress management, advocacy, problem solving, critical thinking, etc.
  • Develop teaching tools such as task analysis to break down tasks into more manageable steps. Create tools to promote self-prompting to foster independence such as: timelines, task lists, check lists, sequencing, visuals, etc.
  • Documentation of goals, support provided and individual response is required, as well as, monthly summation of service delivery, progress and concerns/issues.
  • On-going professional communication with parents, College & School District personnel and Host Companies is required. Attend bi-annual district student meetings to provide update to team
  • Consistently role model to encourage students to exhibit proper campus and work conduct at all times.
  • Provide information and linkage to students and families for adult services such as OPWDD and ACCES-VR prior to graduation.

HOURS: 40/Monday through Friday/must be flexible

STARTING SALARY: $ 20.31 to $ 22.35 per hour

Job Requirements:

  • Associate’s Degree in the field of education or related field (e.g. Human Services, Psychology, etc.) preferred; High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • College experience preferred.
  • Experience with youth and vocational type services preferred.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license which meets acceptable standards of the agency’s automobile insurance company.
  • Must be able to become CPR/1st Aid & driving certified through the agency.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.31 - $22.35 per hour
