Position Summary This is a hybrid position located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Must be a U.S. Person as defined in applicable law, or otherwise authorized or eligible for authorization, to access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Thales is currently looking for an RF Lead Project Engineer in Salt Lake City, UT USA The Project Engineer is responsible for the technical project deliveries to either internal or external customers. The candidate will lead a team of engineers to produce project deliverables that meet cost, schedule and technical goals. The Project Engineer works closely with the Project Manager to ensure all technical objectives of the project are being met. Our products are Navigation Aids (NAVAIDs) and vary between full design and development projects to delivery based projects. Our products are RF based and RF experience is required for this role. This role is also known as an RF Project Engineer, Engineering Delivery Manager, or Solution Engineering Manager. Thales Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by over two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN, VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 10,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 180 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market. The RF Lead Project Engineer will report directly to the local Engineering Manager of the Thales NAS business segment Key Areas of Responsibility Be the “face of engineering” with our customers Communicate with the customer’s engineering teams to explain and “sell” various technical aspects of the design. Act as the primary technical contact for customer on all technical issues Communicate to internal teams on the progress of projects, and performance of projects Lead technical internal and external research and development projects Find solutions to technical problems from the system level to the circuit level Produce project planning, requirements, and testing documents while playing an active part in the day-to-day design and development decision-making process Contribute to creative problem solving Assist in monitoring cost & schedule throughout the project development process Operate effectively as part of a small diverse team of creative, independent individuals Lead and coordinate multi-discipline engineers through the full engineering design lifecycle including addressing obsolescence for Thales’ TACAN family of products Perform development and/or maintenance of specifications, interfaces, design, implementation, integration, and testing of Navigation Aid products to support the team’s ability to achieve success Manage scope and schedule to provide high quality deliverables per internal and external customer commitments/requirements Ensure that the project deliverables meet the customer's requirements, contract specification and the necessary clearances (e.g. security, safety, export control) Work with the Engineering Manager to define the strategy including, the system development cycle, the practices and tools, the risks identification and the associated mitigation actions Plan and prioritize engineering activities in order to get projects to completion; meeting quality schedule and budgetary requirements Capture of customer requirements and flow down into System/Subsystem Specification (SSS) requirements to determine collectively the relevant modifications to the hardware, software and system Organize reviews at all levels of the design, development and qualification of the solution Communicate effectively, professionally and in a timely manner with internal personnel, external customers, consultants and subcontractors Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or Master’s degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with a minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience Prior experience in RF design and development of complex Radio Frequency hardware At least 6 years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including Project Engineering “Grown up” through a technical design path Hands on experience with electrical engineering; specifically the design and implementation of circuit card assemblies At least 5 years of experience in all stages of design, development, testing and manufacturing Demonstrated technical leadership – with the ability to build and sustain good working relationships with staff, peers and managers, customers and other stakeholders Self-starter willing to initiate action without prior counseling or direction Excellent Team player with proven ability to accomplish goals through collaboration Ability to operate effectively and autonomously across multiple teams in situations of ambiguity leveraging problem solving skills and a willingness to learn with only high-level direction Prior experience communicating pertinent and technical information to external customers and other stakeholders on a regular basis Ability to work in a multinational and multicultural team with varied degrees of experience Prior experience with project management and delivery processes and practices, commercial acumen and a robust approach to budget and schedule control Ability to simultaneously support and complete a large and varied list of tasks Ability to travel to customer/vendor facilities as required, for solution of mutual problems Ability to work directly with our customers, addressing advanced technical inquiries, learning about requirements and guiding them to the right product solution Being a life-long learner, always looking for ways to make things more efficient Being a “Big Picture” thinker Proven track record engaging and influencing strong stakeholders Ability to develop innovative and low risk practical engineering strategies to manage a complex project across the full project lifecycle Strong appreciation of Safety and Safety Assurance within the Engineering discipline Familiarity with project management and delivery processes and practices, commercial acumen and a robust approach to budget and schedule control Preferred Qualifications Have a basic knowledge of NAVAIDS equipment’s such as ILS, VOR, TACAN, DME… and in the technical field of air traffic management and on the various regulations / standards such as EN, ICAO or specific local standards Experience of working within a safety environment in an aeronautic/transportation or similar industry Extensive experience and built knowledge in electrical hardware design (specifically within the domain of Radio Frequency [RF] signal electronics and antennas) including in hardware, firmware and software Integration, Validation, Verification and Qualification (IVVQ) test environments Knowledge of Software / Hardware safety assurance standards: FAA DO-278A (or DO-178B/C), RTCA DO-254 Proficient in the use of Requirement Management tools (e.g. DOORS), configuration management tools, technical documentation tools, and problem reporting tools (e.g. JIRA) Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, or German Master’s Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or similar technical field Experience with Thales tools and processes, if internal Experience with DOD and/or FAA Programs Special Position Requirements Travel: Anticipated to be less than 10% annually.
