TITLE

Academic Advisor II – Academic Success Advisor

JOB SUMMARY

The Academic Success Advisor is a member of University Academic Advising, a department that exists to advocate and support student success at Texas Woman’s University and advance undergraduate academic advising at the institution. The Academic Success Advisor is responsible for proactive advising and providing academic support for non-major student populations and working to find solutions to barriers that may hinder student success. This position helps identify, outline and achieve educational and developmental goals for students identified through Early Alert and the PASS Program. This includes working collaboratively with campus partners to provide resources and academic support to increase retention, persistence, and degree completion. The advisor will develop, coordinate, and facilitate activities and programs in conjunction with instructional and student services units that will help ensure the retention and success of students. Work is performed independently under limited supervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policy & Procedures.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Designated Academic Advising Administrator

Supervises: May supervise Student Assistants

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

  • Advises non-major undergraduate students who are in transition, dual credit, changing majors, undecided, or exploring majors.
  • Utilizes Early Alert notification system to identify students whose behaviors indicate a lack of academic success strategies.
  • Develops interventions for students who are identified as at-risk, on probation or suspension.
  • Monitors progress of students with check-ins, scheduled meetings, and proactive outreach and communication.
  • Helps students to identify and address obstacles and barriers that prevent them from progressing towards degree completion.
  • Refers students to appropriate student support units and conduct follow-up on referrals.
  • Conducts workshops to assist students in developing essential skills for academic success.
Maintains accurate records of student interactions and progress.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Establishes and maintains contact with various campus resources and departments.
  • Participates in New Student Orientation, Transfer Orientation, and other designated recruitment/retention activities.
  • Attends meetings/workshops/trainings to keep abreast of university and function changes.
  • Serves on campus committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

    EDUCATION

    Bachelor’s degree required.

    EXPERIENCE

    Three years of higher education academic advising experience is required. Additional job-related experience and/or education may substitute for the required experience on a year-to-year basis. Experience working with diverse populations, first-generation, or students experiencing academic challenges is strongly preferred.

    REQUIREMENT

    Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

    • Working knowledge of office practices and methods.
    • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and/or verify information accurately.
    • Ability to coordinate work with other employees, providing direct instruction or supervision as assigned.
    • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.
    • Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
    • Self-starter demonstrating initiative in a fast-paced higher education environment.
    • Knowledge of academic programming related to advising and academic support.
    • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.
