Texas Department of Public Safety is Hiring a Facilities Maintenance Specialist Near Lubbock, TX

Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Specialist to join our team.

Performs highly complex (senior-level) building maintenance and construction work. Work involves building repair, renovation, restoration, and alteration in semi-skilled and skilled work in various trades in the agency’s headquarters complex and remote facilities including but not limited to installing various room finishes, walls, paneling, doors, windows, utility systems, stationary or motorized equipment and/or repairing those items due to wear or damage. May oversee the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

1. Coordinate and/or perform semi-skilled work to maintain or repair building and/or stationary equipment including but not limited to plumbing, masonry, carpentry, painting, pouring and finishing concrete, paneling, installing various building structures, locks, acoustical ceilings, drywall, paneling, miscellaneous maintenance work, installing cove base, electrical wiring/rough outs and fixtures, etc.

2. Requisition materials and equipment at various locations for maintenance repairs and/or construction projects.

3. Assist with moving furniture, boxes, by carrying the items or using pallet jacks, dollies, etc.

4. Install and repair extensive sprinkler systems.

5. Read moderately complex drawings, sketches, and blueprints to determine details of assigned tasks, perform material take-offs, order materials and supplies, and plan/schedule task sequences and time allotments.

6. Inspect existing structures to determine and follow best methods and sequences to accomplish work orders or daily schedules of work on assigned tasks and notifies management of any noted building issues.

7. Perform as crew leader for multiple-employee tasks.

8. Complete appropriate documents, work orders, reports to include but not limited to documenting length of time spent on each job, materials used, and describing work completed.

9. May work hours beyond and other than normal work hours including holidays and weekends as needed. May work other than normal hours to accomplish special projects or respond to off-hours maintenance emergencies as needed.

10. May perform workshop operations to fabricate specialized items needed for project work to refinish furniture, doors, paneling, cabinets, etc.

11. May serve as a liaison between contractors/vendors and assigned project managers.

12. May perform minor equipment repair.

13. May mix and spread pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides outdoors under close supervision of a license applicator.

14. May operate various gas and diesel powered equipment to mow grass, cut limbs, trim grass and shrubs, and remove cuttings and trash.

15. May travel to remote agency facilities to accomplish repair, renovation, or restoration tasks as assigned.

16. Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education – High School Diploma/equivalent.

2. Experience – Minimum of two (2) years’ experience performing building trades work on commercial or residential projects and attainment of competent skills in at least one (1) skills area (frame or finish carpentry,plumbing, sanitation, painting, etc.).

Substitution Note: Technical school training in a skilled construction trade (as listed above) may substitute for the required work experience at the rate of six (6) months of full-time training equal to one (1) year of full-time work experience. If used to substitute for the required work experience, satisfactory completion of the training must be provided (certificate, transcript, etc.).

3. Licensure and/or Certification – If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator license.

4. Regulatory knowledge – Working knowledge of building maintenance/construction in designated skilled trades and some knowledge in other related building trades. Basic understanding of building codes such as Fire Codes, American with Disabilities Act, etc. or ability to learn how they apply to facilities. The ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.

5. Maintenance knowledge – Skill in the use of hand and power tools to accomplish tasks involved in maintenance, repair, dismantling, construction, refresh, and remodeling of the building structures. Ability to learn a variety of processes, procedures, methods, various standard materials, and supplies applicable to constructing, remodeling, maintaining, and repairing office buildings and other structures. Ability to learn procedures for and to operate construction equipment (jack hammers, etc.) safely and effectively. Ability to learn and effectively apply procedures for maintaining and making minor repairs to tools, equipment, and machinery. Work safely and effectively in construction environments involving heavy dust, dirt, noise, moving equipment, and other adverse factors. Ability to bend various sizes of singular and multiple conduits by hand. Ability to accurately estimate materials requirements for repair or construction tasks and to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in accomplishing a wide variety of repair, renovation and construction projects.

6. Interpersonal Skills – Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers.

7. Organizational and Prioritization Skills – Must be organized, flexible, and able to effectively prioritize in a multi-demand and constantly changing environment; able to meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy, timeliness or professionalism.

8. Presentation/Communication Skills – Must be able to construct and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations to a variety of audiences and/or individuals.

9. Technology (computers/hardware/software/operating systems) – Must possess appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems and be able to learn new software/systems. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

10. Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.

11. Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.

12. Travel and/or Schedule – May be required to travel up to forty percent (40%) to remote agency facilities to accomplish repair, renovation, or restoration tasks as assigned and work other than normal hours to accomplish special projects.

· Ability to speak, hear, and exercise visual acuity;

· Ability to transfer weights of one hundred (100) pounds anticipated for this position

· Driving requirements: Moderate frequency (40%).
