Tetra Tech Careers is Hiring an Environmental Data Analyst/Modeler Near Triangle, NC

Tetra Tech is currently seeking an Environmental Data Analyst/Modeler to join the Center for Ecological Analytics and Modeling team. The successful candidate will support a range of aquatic and terrestrial resource projects and programs and have experience with research in a specific environmental field and a fundamental background in hydrology and/or hydrologic processes. They should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, supporting multiple projects in a team setting. They will also be asked to support teams of scientists, statisticians, and hydrologists to deliver research products for our clients. The successful candidate should have a willingness to learn existing systems, templates, and workflows as well as improve these processes. They are detail oriented, quality focused and will be asked to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting a variety of environmental (terrestrial and aquatic) projects, with a primary focus on watershed and receiving water modeling, geospatial research and analysis, and watershed management.

Your Role:

  • Conduct process-based and empirical modeling of in-stream and receiving water phenomena for hydrologic and aquatic ecology applications.
  • Conduct data analysis across a wide spectrum of research foci including remote sensing for terrestrial applications, geospatial analysis and water quality analysis.
  • Conduct climate change-related research and impact assessments for terrestrial and aquatic systems.
  • Write clean, logical, well-commented Python and/or R code for research-based projects, data management, quality assurance/quality control, and automation opportunities.
  • Collaborate with team members on shared code/analysis scripts using Git/GitHub.
  • Conduct research related to specific topics in watershed and receiving water modeling and analysis, remote sensing and machine learning, and water quality management studies.
  • Compile, analyze, and research watershed dynamics, remotely sensed data, hydrodynamic and water quality data using geospatial information systems (GIS) and statistical techniques.
  • Collaborate with team members and interact with clients across government, nonprofit, and industry settings.
  • Support development and writing of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Develop or prepare descriptive graphs, maps, and tables/matrices.
  • Prepare memos to contribute to project documentation and deliverables.
  • Conduct quality control and assurance.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental-related discipline.
  • Strong experience in an environmentally related discipline with an understanding of general concepts related to hydrology, hydraulics, water quality, water resources planning, and environmental statistics.
  • Experience with at least one process-based water modeling tool (e.g., HEC-RAS, WASP, SWAT, HSPF.).
  • Excellent coding skills in at least one coding language (Python and/or R preferred).
  • Experience developing Python and/or R code related to geospatial modeling and mapping, data wrangling and management, and data visualization.
  • Experience conducting complex geospatial analyses utilizing ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro.
  • Experience with or interest in learning version control and coding best practices using Git/GitHub.
  • Demonstrated statistical experience in traditional frequentist methods and artificial intelligence/machine learning applied to an environmentally related discipline.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills and attention to detail.
