What Will You Be Doing?

The Senior Accountant role will serve as team leader for all domestic indirect tax accounting and compliance including property tax, sales and use tax, alcohol/liquor, federal excise tax (passenger& fuel), state & local fuel tax, and all other airline specific taxes (PFC, APHIS, IUF/CUF, TSA 9/11 Security Fee, etc). The Senior Accountant will need to interpret, present, and explain complex passenger tax issues to various internal business partners, external auditors, and government auditors. This individual must be able to develop and manage processes as well as train staff accountants, interns, and contractors on those processes. As this role will assist the tax department with research and ad hoc projects, this individual should have a demonstrated ability to perform tax research.

Essential Functions

  • Review monthly and quarterly tax returns and supporting documentation for:
    • Sales/Use
    • Alcohol/Liquor
    • State & Local Fuel (reporting & refund claims)
    • Federal Excise (Passenger & Fuel)
    • Passenger Facility Charge
    • Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (Passenger & Aircraft Clearance)
    • TSA 9/11 Security Fee
  • Review indirect tax liability account reconciliations of amounts filed and remitted on returns to tax jurisdictions
  • Liaise with legal department to obtain new licenses and ensure compliance with all license and exemption requirements
  • Coordinate with the internal technology team to configurate passenger taxes and fees rate updates
  • Coordinate communications and on-sight visits for all indirect tax audits, including governmental and external audits
  • Liaise with outside consultants to ensure property tax valuations are appropriate and/or challenged as appropriate 
  • Coordinate tax planning projects to include tax research, information gathering and analysis, and modeling
  • Regularly train and support interns who are hired on a seasonal basis

Other Functions

  • Assist the income tax team with preparation of apportionment calculations
  • Assist other indirect staff with passenger taxes and VAT in foreign jurisdictions
  • Support corporate initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams
  • Complete special/ad hoc projects as assigned by the manager or director

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience (3-5 years)
  • Strong computer spreadsheet and word processing skills
  • Airline industry experience a plus

  • Strong analytical skills to effectively evaluate data, identify variances, and resolve discrepancies
  • Ability to understand the big picture and progression of daily work
  • Ability to adhere to monthly tasks and work in a deadline orientated environment
  • Ability to prioritize, analyze and resolve problems using sound judgment
  • Work under time constraints and consistently meet all deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English with emphasis on customer service
  • Flexible, adaptable and team oriented
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of all business information
  • Available to work occasional extra hours throughout the year based on departmental needs

Supervision Received

General Direction: The incumbent normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.

Positions Supervised

Seasonal interns and contractors on an as-needed basis.

Salary Range: $62,000 - $83,850
